Millions of people suffer from occasional melancholic depression, better known as “the blues”. This is not as severe as clinical depression, which should be treated by a medical professional. The blues are just a sad, downbeat, out-of-sorts feeling that people get from time to time. Here are some ways to get rid of the blues.

Feeling blue? You may be suffering from melancholic depression, which is a feeling of sadness that comes over people for no apparent reason. If your condition persists or deepens you should see a doctor, but if it's just a mild feeling of "the blues", here are some tips for pulling yourself out of it.

. Get up! When you have a case of melancholic depression it often helps to get off your chair and do something. Work out at the gym, take a walk, start a project, anything to get yourself busy. By focusing outward, making plans and goals and working to achieve them, we can often lift that melancholy feeling. Small, achievable goals are best, because your confidence will grow as you achieve each one, and you’ll feel better and better.

. Reach out to someone. Focusing your attention on someone else means you can’t spend so much time brooding about your own troubles. Reach out, give some aid to a person in need, and you’ll start to feel better almost immediately. For one thing, you’ll get the satisfaction of knowing that you helped someone, and that’s a great way to dissipate those blue feelings. There’s an old expression, “To be happy, make someone else happy.” There’s a lot of wisdom in that statement.

. Splurge! Go to the movies. Eat a hot fudge sundae. Go to a ballgame and scream your lungs out cheering for your team. The important thing is to splurge, do something that you don’t normally do. When you treat yourself to something special, it lifts you out of your routine, your pattern. Sometimes that’s all it takes to change your thoughts and get you thinking in a more positive manner.

.  Put it all in perspective. When you’re suffering from melancholic depression, everything seems gloomy, and the smallest setback can seem enormous. Prayer and meditation can put things in perspective. By focusing your thoughts on the eternal, you’ll see that whatever mundane thing is getting you down really doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.
