Swollen lips are often caused by a severe allergic reaction. Though swelling of the lips is certainly annoying, there are a few natural remedies that work.

  1. First determine if your swollen lips are due to an allergic reaction or a virus. If you have sores or blisters on the lips, the swelling is most likely caused by a virus and you should see a doctor immediatly.

If your lips are swollen and you also have itching and redness, the swelling is probably caused by an allergic reaction. Allergic reactions can be caused by items such as new washing detergents, perfumes or a new medication you might be taking.

  2. If you have determined that the cause of the allergy is a washing powder or perfume, remove the item from your home and rewash all clothes, towels and bedding that have been affected. You might want to wash each item more than once to make sure that the offensive scent or chemical is completely gone.

  3. Place a cold compress on your lips. You can either use a towel filled with ice or a towel that has been soaked in cold water and put in the refrigerator. Leave the compress on for one half our at a time. Apply the compress at least 3 times a day to treat your swollen lips.

  4. Apply a wax based medicated lip balm to prevent dryness and cracking of your swollen lips. Burt's Bees brand is effective as are other brands that can be purchased from a local pharmacy.

Remember to consult your doctor immediately if your lips remain swollen for more than two days. If your lips have blisters adn sores, see a doctor as soon as possible. You may be suffering from a virus which needs medical treatment.
