This article provides tips on choosing the right foundation to suit oily skin.

When it comes to foundation you not only need to pick the right shade, but the right style for your skin type. Oily skin is prone to shine and visible pores so you need to look for a foundation that can deal with these skin issues. There are also several things you should be mindful of when it comes to applying foundation to oily skin.

The two most suitable foundations types for oily skin are; water based liquid foundation and powder foundations.

Water based liquid foundations

If you look at the ingredients list on the back of a liquid foundation bottle you will find that the first ingredient is either oil or water. If you have oily skin you want to avoid the type that lists oil as the first ingredient as they will make your skin look greasy. Select a foundation that lists water as the first ingredient. Some brands will clearly label the foundation as an oil free formulation specifically tailored to oily skin. These often have oil absorbing properties and help foundation last longer on oily skin. Make sure that the foundation is a non-comedogenic variety; this means that it won’t clog pores. In addition ensure you select a liquid foundation designed to give a smooth, matt finish rather then any shine or a dewy look.

Powder foundations

There are typically two different powder formulations; compact powder foundation and loose mineral powder foundation. Compact powder foundation is perfect for on the go and it’s provides a light to medium coverage which helps to reduce shine. It allows you to easily touch up oily zones throughout the day.

Mineral powder foundation also helps absorb oil and shininess. It is so light that you typically don’t even feel like you are wearing any foundation. However it contains light reflecting particles that help create the appearance of flawless skin. It also typically contains sun protection meaning you don’t need to worry about applying a greasy sunscreen.

If you have oily skin stay away from thick cream foundations and mousse foundations. Mousse foundations tend to be highly moisturizing so they are better left to women with dry skin. Cream foundations give great coverage, but they have a tendency to block pores. Coupled with oily skin they have a tendency to cause breakouts.

When it comes to applying foundation to oily skin it can be beneficial to apply a primer beforehand. Primers act as a base for foundation helping it stay put all day. They aim to keep skin’s moisture balance right by controlling oil flow. Primers come in different formulas for different skin types so ensure you pick a powder or liquid variety that is suited to oily skin.

If your oily skin is also prone to breakouts it is best to apply foundation and any other products with a clean brush or sponge applicator. This way you avoid transferring bacteria across your face. If you do decide on a liquid foundation, it is beneficial to apply a dusting of translucent powder over the top to absorb any oil that may cause shine.
