An Internet domain name is an organization, business or personal individual's name on the Internet. The domain name takes the place of the numerical IP address on the Web. There are certain tips to keep in mind to creating the perfect domain name if you are a webmaster.

  • A domain represents an organization or person's unique name on the Internet. It consists of IP addresses such as "http://www.yourdomain.com."

    Types

  • The names of domains themselves are unlimited and can be registered at several websites such as Godaddy, (see Resources below), or Register.com. While there are unlimited domain names, there are a few types of domain extensions. Some of the popular extensions that can be found on a domain name are .gov (government agencies), edu (educational insitutions), .org (non-profit groups), .com (commercial websites),or .net (network organizations).

    Misconceptions

  • While domain names were originally used to name an IP address and label a website, many domain names are now being abused for mass marketing purposes or even spam. One term, defined as cybersquatting, is becoming increasing popular amongst spammers and mass marketers. A cybersquater will register a popular domain or a phrase that is often searched for, and then use the address to hijack them to another website elsewhere.

  • Domain names can often be beneficial to Internet webmasters as they often can be resold. Internet domain names that become popular with increasing traffic and have major marketing trends, can be purchased for large amounts of money. Domain names can be auctioned off on domain register websites or even on eBay. While a certain domain name itself may not exist anymore, a surfer who types in the original name at the IP address will be taken to the new website located at that name. Registering at these types of domains can help someone gain traffic with little or no marketing. This is called type-in traffic.   • When creating a domain name to register for a hobby, business or personal website, there are some things to think about. Webmasters should decide on a domain name that is short and easy to remember. Think of popular phrases that are related to your hobby or business and how they are reflected by your website. Also try to add in a popular keyword that can be used to search for your website within your domain. Then decide if your domain should be hyphenated or how you would like your domain name to be combined. Once you have an idea, you then must search for your domain to see if it has already been registered to make sure that it is available. This is why you should have a list of several combination of names for your domain. If your website has the budget, it is also best to try to register your new domain name with as many as the domain extensions that you can.
