How to Make Realistic Stage Blood

Here’s a great recipe on how to make fake blood. This is great stage blood for Halloween or for stage acting. This costume blood recipe is non-toxic and can be made in large quantities, so imagination is the limit with how you will use it to scare or enthrall your audience.

You will need the following:
  • 2/3 c. Corn Syrup
  • 1/3 c. Warm Water
  • 5 Tbsp Corn Starch
  • 4 tsp red food coloring
  • 1 Tbsp Powdered Cocoa
  • 2 drops of green or yellow food coloring
  • Step 1

Mix the corn starch with the water in a large mixing bowl. Mix it as best you can, you are trying to make sure that there are no lumps in the mixture. Lumps aren’t a big deal if you are just splashing it somewhere, but if you really want to get creative and use tubes and such to direct the ‘blood flow’ then lumpy blood will clog.

  • Step 2

Stir in the corn syrup. This is what will give the blood its thickness. All of the ingredients can be played with to get the optimal mixture of thickness, and color. Try out a few batches to see which one comes up best.

  • Step 3

Add the food coloring slowly, checking for color. Also, even though it isn’t listed in the ingredients, have a little blue food coloring on hand as well. The blue will go a long way, so use it sparingly to give the blood a darker more ‘vein-y’ color. Keep in mind that liquid food coloring can stain quite badly, so either wear clothes you plan to sacrifice or you can try using powdered food coloring to mitigate the staining effect. Kool Aid powder can be used as well. I would recommend the red and purple colors.

  • Step 4

You can get really creative with the delivery system. Use latex makeup to hide tubes where skin is showing, and you can fill a bag or a balloon with this stuff and squeeze it through clear fish tank tubing. Little hand pumps and lengths of tube should be available at any pet store in the fish department. This is also non toxic, but I won’t vouch for the taste, as I’ve never used it for facial effects.
