A food truck winner was announced at the annual New York City Vendy Award

New Yorkers are just like the rest of the country!  They love food from the vendor carts.

Forget the expensive restaurants!  If you're hungry and have a few bucks, you can fill up right

from the truck on the street!

Forget the word "carts."  That probably came about when vendors were selling hot dogs.

They're now known as mobile kitchens, roach coaches, food trucks, lunch trucks, etc.

While many small time operators have converted a pickup for food sales, they generally will

sell only prepared foods, pastries, coffee, candy, sodas, chips, sandwiches and such.

Some of them have daily routes and continue to serve the same customers day after day.

Such as workers in factories, businesses, students in schools or colleges and such.

And many people buy from them on a daily basis.

Indeed, they even look forward to hearing that loud horn so they can indulge.

So they can enjoy a  break for twenty minutes or so.

What makes it nice, is that some operators will even put your purchase on "the books" so

you can pay on payday.

Whoopee!

But sooner or later, you pay.

But the new trend is to have a mobile kitchen on wheels and cook right on the site.

Using all fresh ingredients.

Ooohhh!   The aroma!  You can smell it a block away!

If that doesn't bring you in, nothing will!

Plus...the food is at a reasonable price generally.

And they sell lots of food.

You often have to wait in line.

That's what's happening in New York City!

Some swear that the food is as good as any restaurant!  At a way, way lower price.

That's even better!  Stretch your dollars!

So many people are eating off the trucks that they started a contest and give away a big

trophy to the winning vendor every year.

And if you win, everyone knows about it.

Your business muchrooms even more!

So the Vendy Award is given every year to the top food truck kitchen.

It's kind of the oscar for food so to speak!

This year is the fifth annual award.

For food trucks only.

It's important to note that ONLY the public can make nominations.

With eleven trucks in the finals, the winner was announced on Saturday, September 26th

at the Queens Museum of Art Plaza in Corona Park.

Trucks (carts) were entered from the five buroughs of New York City.

The event drew about 1,000 people and was sold out.

The entire event lasted five hours.

After many delightful bites, the judges finally announced the winner:

THE COUNTRY BOYS CART

The wait in line for their food was about 45 minutes.

It's a true mexican kitchen operated by husband and wife Fernando and Yolanda Martinez

from Brooklyn.  They're originally from Puebla, Mexico.

So it's real mexican food made by real mexican people.

And Fernando's acceptance speech was all in Spanish.

They use all fresh ingredients and make their own tortillas right on the spot.

Their specialty is huaraches.  Some of the best anywhere.

It's similar to a tostada with lots of goodies on top.

They also have quite a following for their tacos and quesadillas.

They've been in business now for 16 years.  On weekends you'll generally find them at the

Red Hook Ballfields at Clinton and Bay streets.

Some Saturdays they set up shop at the Fort Greene Brooklyn Flea at Lafayette and

Clermont.  They are there from 10 AM to 5 PM.  And naturally, there is always a line.

But it moves fast.

So their many customers say that if you want real good mexican food in New York City,

go to the Country Boys cart!

Ole!  Mas por favor!
