Allergy is an abnormal reaction of the body to a previously encountered allergen introduced by inhalation, ingestion, injection, or skin contact, often manifested by itchy eyes, runny nose, wheezing, skin rash, or diarrhea.

  • Antihistamines help soothe itchy eyes and runny nose. They start soothing your symptoms right away, and they stay in your system for three to six hours. The most troublesome part of using antihistamines is the sleepiness they cause. Many people choose not to use them for that reason. Always avoid driving and operating machinery while taking antihistamines. If you find that one kind of antihistamine doesn’t help your symptoms, try a different brand before you give up on them altogether. To get the best effects, some doctors recommend that you take antihistamines throughout the entire pollen season. Always follow the package instructions. Taking too many or too few will prevent the best results. People with the following disorders should not use antihistamines unless instructed by their doctors: asthma, peptic ulcer, narrow-angle glaucoma, and symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy.
  • Decongestants also help soothe symptoms from allergic rhinitis. Often, decongestants will reverse the sleepiness caused by antihistamines if you take them together (or take a drug that contains both). You can get decongestant tablets, liquids and nasal sprays. You can use the pills and liquids for long periods of time. But never use the nasal spray for longer than three days at a time. After three days, the decongestant can start to cause congestion. Use the pill or liquid forms instead. People suffering from diabetes, hyperthyroidism, heart disease and high blood pressure should use decongestants cautiously. Always follow the package instructions carefully to get the best results.
