Everyone loses hair everyday; about 50 to 100 hairs a day which is normal. But when the loss isn't replaced and you see your hair thinning, that'll worry you a bit especially for women who see their hair as their crowning glory. So let's see what causes women's hair loss and is there a cure?

Women's hair loss is unlike those experienced by men because the reason for men's hair loss that may lead to baldness is caused by the sex hormones, androgens, which women don't produce as much. In this aspect, women are lucky. But this doesn't mean that women don't experience hair loss. The causes of women's hair loss are mostly external unlike men and in most cases are temporary in nature. Below is a list of what causes women's hair loss.

Causes of women's hair loss #1 : Hormonal

The body produces hormones that can both stimulate hair growth as well as cause hair loss. The hormones that cause hair loss is the androgen DHT or Dihydrotesterone. Everyone has DHT but not everyone will suffer from hair problem. The reason lies in the hair follicles. If the hair follicles have a greater number of androgen receptors attached to them, then the likelihood of hair loss is higher. The only treatment to counteract this is using anti-androgens which are preventive drugs that inhibit the creation of DHT.

Causes of women's hair loss #2 : Childbirth

Many women experience hair loss after childbirth. In this instant, many of the hair enter the telogen or resting phase. However, this is a temporary problem that will pass within 1 to 6 months.

Causes of women's hair loss #3 : Birth control pills

Women who are born with Androgenic Alopecia usually experience hair loss when they take birth control pills at a much younger age. Women with a family history of hair loss are well advised to consult a doctor before taking birth control pills that may trigger hair loss. However, this type of hair loss is also temporary and may cease in 1 to 6 months.

Causes of women's hair loss #4 : Deficient diet

Everyone should practise eating a good balanced diet with enough protein to encourage growth. Lacking in protein may cause the body to preserve the protein that's already in the body and push hair growth into a resting phase and even cause hair to fall. If your hair can be pulled easily out by the root, then this may be due to a lack of a well-balanced diet. Eating a well-balanced diet rich in protein will solve this problem of hair loss immediately.

Causes of women's hair loss #5 : Low serum iron

Low iron in the body can cause hair loss. And in women, the loss of blood during menstruation can lead to a low serum iron and thus cause hair loss. This situation can be easily remedied by taking a diet rich in iron and supplementing with iron pills.

Most of the causes of women's hair loss mentioned above are temporary but there are instances that the hair loss can be permanent. So consulting a qualified doctor for such instances is the best thing to do.
