Ear Piercing For Babies

Our experience when we got our girl's ears pierced at an early age.

Last October 1 I got my 2-month-old daughter's ears pierced by her pediatrician not to mention got her 1st dose of 5-in-1 vaccine also that time. We, my husband and I, were both hesitant at first about having her ears pierced and the vaccination at the same time but our pediatrician said it was alright and that we shouldn't be worried since she's too young to remember. So we had her ears pierced first and she did cry out loud since she was sleeping that time and it was not fun I guess we should have done it when she was awake. The pediatrician used a piercing gun and 14k gold baby earrings with her birthstone. Then the vaccine was given next and since she was crying her cries grew louder and it took us about 3 minutes to calm her. She was not able to get her sleep back and so she became cranky and wants to be cuddled all the time.

When we got home from the hospital she was not crying anymore but she doesn't want to lie down on the bed or the crib all she want was to be carried. So I was wondering which part of her was hurting, her ears or her thigh, but of course she can't tell me since she's just 2-months-old. I gave her a doze of paracetamol so that if ever she'll get fever from the vaccine it'll won't get high and also to alleviate the pain if ever she's feeling pain from the piercing or from the vaccine. it took 2 doses till she became fully calm and then all she came back to her routine of sleeping and drinking milk the whole night.

So as a piece of advice to others wanting their daughter's ears pierced it's better to do it while their awake with their focus diverted to another thing so as to eliminate the surprise factor that would make them cranky and cry a lot. Then better have it done by someone who knows how to do it and does it aseptically so as to prevent infection. Better use 14k gold to prevent allergies and to promote healing as I've read from an article that gold has an element in it that promotes clean wound healing. And I guess it's always better to have a baby's ears pierced one day at a younger age such as two months and have them vaccinated at a different day so that whenever they cry you'd be able to figure out if the crying is caused by the piercing or the vaccine. As my grandmother said having them pierced at a young age like from newborn till before their first birthday would prevent remembrance of the pain and prevents them from touching or pulling at their ears. Just like my baby ever since she got pierced she didn't seem to notice that there's an earring in her ears. Or of course you can also have them pierced till they become five years old so at least they can grasp the full meaning of what is happening. But all in all I'm glad my baby got her piercing early that she won't even remember any pain from it and she's really pretty having her earrings on.

yeah,, for some children and also for their parents, it would be a nightmare to withstand those 5 to 10 long minutes of so called hell.. good thing is that though parents do remember it , children wont be able to remember it after they grew up.. but the pain the child faces at that time can't be described..

My daughter got her ear pierced when she was 3 months old. It was a painful experience on her part because she was awake that time and she quite knew that somebody is trying to hold her . Though the woman who is in charge of the ear piercing uses an ear gun, it takes a few minutes before the other ear was ear pierced again because she cried a lot due to the pain. But when its done, its just a little hush and touch carrying her and she kept silent then.

I also experienced the same situation when my daughter had her ear pierced. I really felt so sad when my baby cried, i knew she was hurt. but the pedia assured us that the baby is ok...
