Clean and shiny hair can be hard to achieve if your hair is suffering from soap buildup from shampoo and conditioners. A few simple household items can help wash out soap and other chemicals during the rinsing process and keep your hair clean and soap-free.

For the first few washes, it's okay to use your regular shampoo and conditioner -- just with a little somthing extra. Add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to your usual amount of shampoo. Mix them together in the palm of your hand, then scrub the mixture into your hair as you normally would, making sure to suds thoroughly before rinsing. Brand isn't important when it comes to selecting baking soda, since the properties remain relatively the same.

The baking soda should help wash the soap out of your hair; it may change the texture or color of your shampoo, but that's a normal part of the process. Keep the suds away from your mouth, otherwise you'll experience a salty taste from the baking soda. Work the soda and shampoo into your scalp thoroughly to clean as much residue as deep as possible.

Once the shampoo is washed out, pour one cup of vinegar over your hair (white or apple cider). Rub into the strands of hair, then either rinse again or towel your hair dry. Vinegar also helps wash chemicals out of hair so it looks clean and shiny afterwards, and should remove any residue the baking soda fails to remove.

Make sure neither of these products causes a skin reaction when you come in contact with it before applying it to your hair or scalp. If there are no skin reactions, then invest in a box of baking soda and a bottle of vinegar to give your hair a much-needed shiny boost with a simple rinse.
