Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are disorders of the jaw muscles, temporomandibular joints, and/or the nerves associated with chronic facial pain. Any problem that prevents the complex system of muscles, bones, and joints from working together in harmony may result in temporomandibular disorder. - University of Maryland Medical Center

The jaw of the face of a human being can be said as multi-functional among the joints in the body.  It experiences work out every time we talk, chew, and swallow.  It is observed that 90% of those who suffer from jaw pain are women.

Women are mostly affected of what is called temporomandibular disorder (TMD) that causes jaw pain which extends to the ears, eyes, neck and shoulder.  Some cases can cause nausea, deafness, and difficulty in swallowing.

But it was found out that three (3) people out of four (4) get relief from simple remedies as the following:

  1. Take a warm bath.  A warm bath in the morning and in the evening can relieve the pain.  The moist that one can get from a warm bath can increase the flow of blood to the muscles around the jaw that could help relax and treat the pain.
  2. Eat fish.  TMD is often caused by the swelling of tissues around the jaw that is also the cause of hormone changes during menstruation or when the teeth grind during stress.  Consumption of fish is best where the omega-3s that we get from fatty fish increases production of the body’s anti-inflammatory lipids.
  3. Maintain good posture.  It is often associated that the frequent bent position of the back can lead to TMD.  Posture training techniques can reduce the pain up to 42%.  It is best to exercise the jaw by turning it to the right shoulder then count 5 seconds before turning it to the left shoulder.
  4. Avoid thick, sticky and glutinous food.  Food that will require much chewing like steak, caramel and others increases the stress of the muscles in the jaw.  If you feel that the jaw aches, stop for a while chewing these foods and eat soft food instead.
  5. Relax with yoga.  Everyday stresses result to bad condition of the jaw especially when you are angered.  But these tension can be reduced with yoga and other types of meditation.
