Most people are under the impression that natural gas is toxic, however, it's actually carbon monoxide (produced by malfunctioning equipment or natural gas being burned incorrectly) that is the "silent killer." However, natural gas is highly flammable and carries it's own risks. Read on for more tips on how to safely enjoy natural gas energy in your home.

A good place to start when it comes to natural gas safety is to get a carbon monoxide detector for your home. These detectors are inexpensive, and alert you to unsafe levels of carbon monoxide coming from gas appliances in your home.

Gas ranges should be kept free of food and/or liquid debris to minimize the risk of fire. Grease is the number one danger with a gas range, and grease fires can flare very quickly once ignited.

Make sure to keep all flammable liquids (think any material that says "contents under pressure" on the can) away from natural gas appliances. This includes cleaners, hairspray, and shaving cream - just to name a few.

Clean the areas around gas appliances often, to reduce dust and hair buildup, among other things. This decreases the risk of fire and also helps your unit to remain in proper working condition, using the least amount of energy possible.

Last but definitely not least, if you smell natural gas, be sure to call your utility company right away. In the meantime, remember where your home's natural gas emergency shut off valve is at, and turn it off as quickly as possible while vacating the affected area.
