When a usual babysitter is unavailable, parents must turn to an unknown for child care. Leaving your children with another person is nerve-wracking enough, but hiring someone you do not know to watch your children can create considerable stress. There are ways to ease the babysitter transition for both kids and parents.

When plans cannot be cancelled, you must find child care you can feel comfortable with. Getting last-minute recommendations from friends and neighbors is one way to approace the search for anoter babysitter. Once you find a person who can come over, put in place several safeguards to ease your mind when you have a babysitter you never met.

Get the new babysitter to come over to your house as early as possible on the night you need to go out. This will give you time to go over house rules and get an impression of the person. Remain upbeat and appear confident, especially in front of your children. Make it seem like a fun time having a new person in the house and they will not be as nervous.

Be exceptionally clear about rules, safety practices and anything about your kids that the unknown babysitter should know. Do not be afraid of offending her with information or suggestions.

If possible, set up a hidden camera in the most-used room of the house, such as the living room. A computer web cam may be used if you have recording capabilities. This will give you further peace of mind to determine in the babysitter was good after the fact. Call home during the middle of the evening and chat with your kids for a few minutes will help you stay abreast of how things are going and will let you know if you have to cut the evening short.

Another great way to check on how things went is simply to ask your kids. Phrase the questions in an upbeat manner, but delve into specifics about what the kids did with the babysitter, how she acted and if there were any problems. If there was a problem, parents should be able to tell by their child's behavior.

When faced with the option of having a babysitter you have never met, it is important to focus on safety and comfort first. Without the luxury of interviewing and extended meetings, first impressions can be a good guide. However, checking in on the situation during and after the evening will help you have a positive experience with a babysitter you have never met.
