The Life Cycle Of A Flowering Plant

Most flowers are pollinated by insects and birds.

Flowers have both male and female parts. The male part is called the stamen. Each of the stamen creates millions of small pollen grains. Each of the pollen grains is a single cell with a special kind of nucleus. This stamens can be found around the pistil. The pistil is the female part of a flower.

In the bottom of the pistil grows the ovule and this ovule has a female cell, called an egg cell. When a pollen nucleus from the stamen joins an egg cell, a seed will be formed. This is now called fertilization.

The first step of fertilization is called pollination-pollen, the movement of the pollen from the stamen to the pistil.

Most flowers are pollinated by insects and birds. Wind and the rain also takes parts as they move pollen from the stamen to the pistil.

Fertilization begins its second step when a tube grows out of a pollen grain that is stock to the pistil.

The last step of fertilization is when the sperm joins the egg cell in the ovule. The egg cell then grows into an embryo.

The embryo will now be protected by the ovule that will grow into a seed covering. When the seed forms, the bottom part of the pistil will grow into a fruit and this covers the seed.

Besides an embryo, a seed has also stored food inside.

This food will be use by the embryo if seeds starts to grow. As the seed starts to grow, it will become a new flowering plant.
