Fashion Trends for Fall & Winter 2009-2010

In autumn, fashion designers usually turn to warm colors (orange, red and yellow), but in the 2009 autumn season, we are seeing a mixture of warm and cool colors (purple, blue and green).  Fall fashions for women will include bold colors and earth tones to compliment some flashy fabrics.  Black remains the true basic.  There will be no lack of choices in black garments for fall and winter, as black is foremost in many designer collections.

Fall 2009 brings back some popular classic fabrics.  In addition to the usual mohair, suede, leather, fleece and velvet, cotton stretch fabric appears, which allows for expansion and movement as well as a correctly fitted look.

Corduroy and denim casual pants are not only stylish but also practical.  A trendy    fringe or simple leather belt is appropriate and emit a classic elegance.  Metallic fabrics are used in clothing and accessories such as purses and belts.  They are worn not only for casual, but also for formal.

Animal print (especially leopard) is a fashion trend that has steadily grown this summer, and will continue in prominence through the autumn and winter.  Other animal prints that are in vogue this autumn season are jaguar, cheetah, ocelot and snow leopard.  There are also several tiger patterns, as no two tigers have the exact same pattern, but there are similarities.  The white tiger pattern is an interesting one.  Some accents and jewelry that will be making the scene this fall are listed below:

            1.  Fashionable scarves with elaborate designs

            2.  Dazzling gold jewelry is back

            3.  Long, layered necklaces

            4.  Stacked rings

            5.  Cuff bracelets

            6.  Multi-faceted gemstones

            7.  Large, eclectic watches

            8.  Faux crocodile and alligator handbags, belts

Coats are bold and highly structured this season, with wide panels, geometric shapes and more length, based on the runway look from Costume National and Balenciaga.  The longer coats are great for colder climates.

Masculine fabrics, such as plaids and tweeds, are also shown for the ladies this autumn.  These look great with colorful feminine accessories.

What about the trend in shoes for our fall and winter?  Whether they’re low heals or higher heels, we are still seeing the rather thin-shaped swerved heals with a lot more bulk than we saw in summer.  Thick soles add height as well as style.  In lieu of leather, heavy fabrics provide a sturdy base for chunky buckles, zippers and laces.  Timeless boots provide both protection and class.  Leather trends are patent, adding shine back in shoes, handbags and belts.

Taking a few steps backward on the fashion scene, dresses and skirts are definitely shorter. In this instance, it is probably best to wear your dress length from just above the knee to at least three inches below the knee.  For evening, some are extremely or mini short.  If you feel more elegant in longer dresses, go for the extra length.  If you like the length a little higher, find it and adjust your hems.  It would seem that almost whatever length suits you best, that’s the one for you.
