Travel tip: When to travel

Aug 31st, 2009 by Petal

A few tips about times when it is best to travel on vacation and times when you should stay at home.

Don't travel in high season, that means don't travel when the kids are on vacation in the country you are visiting, and not when your destination gets it's most visitors. The prices will be higher for hotels, flights and entrance fees. The tourist attractions will be crowded and there will be a lot of lines to wait in for tickets. Finding flights and accommodation will be harder as there will be more demand.

However don't go to the other extreme. Don't travel in the absolute off season when some of the tourist attractions will be closed.

Instead go just before or after the high tourist season, when attractions are still available and weather still pleasant, only fewer tourists are about.

Take the weather into account. Rain will stop you from moving about and doing all you want to do. Just as scorching sun is not optimum. If you are going to a country famous for a certain climate then by all means go and experience the unique climate. For example, I love going to northern Scandinavia in the winter, to experience the snow and cold temperatures, I wouldn't want to be in Lapland in the summer.

Go when you are healthy and your house is in order at home so that coming back from your holiday is not going to be unpleasant. Finish cycles before you set off, and don't leave things incomplete which may disturb your break or keep your mind occupied by problems at home.

As we get older, like it or not, our bodies are less capable of performing physically. So be brave and go wild while you can, whether you're in your 20's, 30's 40's or 50's, do the most that you can do on your vacation, there will be plenty of time for slow energy less sightseeing when you are older. Go ahead jump the bungee or try that strange Chinese dish, take chances and have adventure.

Just like starting a diet, saving money or fixing the house, there is never a right time to travel, don't leave it too long and don’t put off that adventure, life is in you today, so go out and see the world!
