Constipation is defined as the inability to easily have a bowel movement. Many factors contribute to the development of constipation. Poor diet in which there is not enough fiber and water intake, intake of narcotics or other drugs which cause constipation, and lack of exercise are just a few of the contributing factors. Second to your skin, your bowel is one of the largest organs in your body. The bowel is responsible for eliminating waste from and detoxifying our bodies as well as absorption of nutrition. When the bowel is not working well over all health suffers. Beyond this, constipation can be painful causing stomach cramping, hemorrhoids, and even rectal bleeding. Proper bowel health can have many benefits. An increase in energy, better skin appearance, better immune response, a decrease in diseases of the bowel such as diverticulitis, and better overall functioning of your body can be obtained by instituting a program of bowel health. It’s important to understand that chemical laxatives are not healthy for the bowel. While they have their place in treatment of constipation, the bowel can become addicted to their use and then unable to function at all without increasing doses of chemicals. A much better alternative is to include diet changes such as soluble fiber, plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, eight glasses of water a day and daily exercise. Exercise stimulates peristalsis of the bowel muscle and is invaluable to bowel health and overall health. Even small increase in exercise such as a daily 10 minute walk can help. Certain foods such as prunes can increase bowel faction and be used in the place of harsh chemicals. Other food such as dairy products, bananas and apples can increase constipation. Making changes in your diet may take time to show results but if you’re consistent your health can improve. Perhaps the most import thing to do is increase your water intake. At least 8 glass of water is recommended. When your bowel is digesting your food, it adds water to the waste as it travels down the bowel. Without enough water in your system your bowel is unable to do its job and constipation can be the result. Keep a glass of water with you and sip on it through the days. Adding psyllium husk products to your diet can also be helpful and psyllium is tasteless. Just be sure you drink enough water along with this. Another helpful product is “First Cleanse”. This is an herbal remedy you can buy at the health store. It’s very gentle yet effective at stimulating bowel function if taken with adequate water. Be sure to follow directions for use and get your doctor input if you’re on medications. Small changes such as these can drastically decrease constipation and help bowel health. You may be amazed at just how much better you will feel! Give these tips for bowel health and constipation relief a try and improve your health!
