Bi-Polar disorder is another moniker for manic depression. Bi-Polar people exhibit sudden changes from a very good mood to a very bad mood. Depression has many forms. This is one of them. Sadness over an event isn't manic depression. Manic depression is a much more serious condition. Another stage of depression is the diagnosis for bi-polar disorder. Manic depression is diagnosed in millions of cases each year in America. Depression of some form touches 17 million Americans annually.

Two thirds of those people will never seek medical attention or even a diagnosis. Nothing can be cured if the victim doesn't go for help. Mental illness is a red stop sign for many Americans, they don't want to deal with it. The negative image of someone who is "nuts" is just too much for them. It's very complex when a disease impacts the brain. It is hard to shake the stigma that comes with the diagnosis. However, as with any form of depression, the affliction does not make you less a person. You're not crazy. This is a disease like any other. Now that it's found, the process of treatment can start.

Medicine is still looking for all the causes of depression. There are many factors that bring on depression. It's well known that consideration must be given to chemical factors, a person's surroundings, and even their genes. It's well known that a chemical imbalance can contribute. Depression is also brought about by stress. Life is full of stress. Issues at school, with loved ones, or just the daily grind can cause it. Depression knows no bounds. It's a disease for rich people and for poor people. It is not racist. No racial group is less likely to contract this disease.

There are similar symptoms no matter the type of depression. The frequent change in personality, the mood swings that go up and then goes down. Depression can result in insomnia. Helpless feelings, or feelings that the future holds no hope are signs. Depression is real when it interferes with your ability to live your life. But people with depression have a light at the end of the tunnel. Help is available. Prescription medications as well as natural herbs can cure it. Psychotherapy can also help. Support groups can also be helpful for those with manic depression. There can't be a cure until help is sought.
