Depression is a medical condition. There are many stages to depression. It begins with mild depression, with bi-polar disorders or manic depression in the middle, to the top rung of major depression.

Depression is no doubt considered a disease. It's a mental illness but still a disease like cancer or diabetes. It is a disease that affects one of the bodily organs. You aren't somehow less just because you have depression. It doesn't mean your cuckoo. Just like other illnesses it can be treated.

Depression starts out as a relatively unseen illness. Everyone becomes a little sad and depressed once in a while. When things don't go our way we get down in the dumps. That's not depression. Depression isn't short term. Depression is long term. Depression is a long lasting sadness or negative feelings that interfere with living . Radical mood swings are a sure sign of depression. If you are suffering from consistent insomnia or bad eating habits, these are also sure tell signs.

Medical depression is often difficult to tag. Many issues need to be considered. Depression is known to be caused by stress. Stress is with people all the time. Relationships bring stress. Making ends meet when the bills are more than the income creates stress. Medical depression often results from the stress involved in child rearing. Emotional suffering can bring on medical depression from stress. Chemical, environmental and even genetic issues further complicate the situation.

Medical depression can be cured. Over 17 million Americans each and every year are affected in some way by medical depression. The negative result is that only a third will ever seek medical assistance. Without diagnosis there can't be a cure. Treatment usually involves a combination of therapy and medications or herbs. There are also many different support groups that allow you to associate with those who suffer and feel the same as you do. Medical depression does not have to isolate you. It will not heal itself. Consult a doctor if you or someone you know shows signs of medical depression.
