If you don't know how to perform website optimization, you can easily find yourself down in the dumps. You are down in the dumps because you finally built that great website for your business, in hopes that it would help your company generate more money, only to find out no one is visiting your website. Obviously, the reason your website is not getting any visitors is because you did not perform website optimization when it was created. The good news is that website optimization is still something you can do for your site.

  1. The first and one of the most important steps to perform website optimization is to choose the right domain name. The mistake that many people make is that they get a domain name that has nothing to do with the services they provide. For great website optimization, you want to choose a domain name that has as many keywords as possible regarding the services you offer. Example, if your services are to sell blue parakeets, you should try to purchase a domain name that incorporates the name blue and parakeets. The science behind this is that when people go to a search engine and type what they are looking for, the first thing that the search engine robots pull up is the domain name. So if someone is searching for blue parakeets and that happens to be part of your domain name, you are likelier to get higher rankings than another website. If you have already purchased your domain name, consider purchasing another one that incorporates your keywords for website optimization.

  2. The text that you have on your website is the second item that is crucially important for great website optimization. Many people put text on their website but they neglect to incorporate any keywords in the text. The search engines are crawling the web looking for keywords that match what a person is searching for. So if you have the keywords in your domain name and you have plenty of keywords in your website text, then you are already way ahead of the competition. Go back and read the text that you have on your website. If there are no keywords repeated on your site, change your text so that keywords are consistently there. You want to this without sounding redundant. An illegal method that some website owners use is that they will go to the bottom of their web page and type their keywords over and over, example, "blue parakeet, blue parakeet, blue parakeet..." If they have a white background on their page, they will make the "blue parakeet" text white so that the text is the same color as the background and cannot be seen by the eye. This will fool the search engines for a moment. But if you get caught, you will be banned from submitting your website to that search engine anymore.

  3. The next item of business to enhance your website optimization is to add "meta-tags" to your website. The meta-tags include the title bar for your website, a short description of your website, along with keywords for your website. You want to incorporate as many of your keywords in the title and description as possible. Adding the meta-tags to your website will require a little knowledge of HTML code. There are some free meta-tag generators online that you can use. However, you will still need to know how to paste the HTML code into your website editor. See the "Resource" section at the bottom of this article for a free online meta-tag generator.

  4. After you have performed your website optimization by following all of the steps above, submit your website to Google and other major search engines for free by following the links below in the "Resource" section. Many people think that they have to pay money to get top search engine rankings. That is not true. If you follow all of the steps above, you will get great search engine rankings for free.

  5. Follow steps 2 through 5 for EVERY PAGE of your website. The meta-tags and keywords may be different for each page. You want to make sure that the keywords, title, and descriptions are specific and relevant to each page for maximum website optimization. Also, instead of submitting just the main page of your website to the search engines, submit EVERY PAGE of your website to the search engines. Submit them one page at a time. Yes, this will take some time and effort, but it will be well worth it. You will see the increase in traffic to your site.
