Making Up a Story

Telling stories can be a lot of fun.

We read books and watch movies because we like stories. We trace our desires to make up stories from camping when we were young or even further when humankind lived in caves. To be able to make up stories is entertaining.

  1. To make up a story choose any object. Perhaps choose the first object you think of.
  2. After selecting an object create an environment where the object resides. If you selected a small boat, perhaps you will select a dock in a small harbor for the environment.
  3. Begin the story by describing the selected object and the environment you created for the object. For example. “The boat was just tied to the dock …”
  4. Now introduce at least one person doing something…anything. “The boat was just tied to the dock when a tall man jumped from it to the dock.”
  5. Describe additional actions. For example, “The man almost slipped when he jumped. It appeared as if his knees were about to buckle but he stood up straight.”
  6. From this point on you can describe the appearance of the person or more actions or interject another person for a conversation

  • Write your stories down. Who knows? Maybe you will write a book!
  • Use stories therapeutically. Perhaps, there are some hidden meanings to your stories that indirectly mirror issues in your life.
  • Creating stories can help you write better, express creativity, and help you communicate more clearly with others.
  • Make sure you consider your audience if you decide to share your stories. You don't want to share a romance novel with non-adults.
