The sum of physical, chemical, biological, and cultural factors that affect life in anyway is environment. Ambient or current environment has a great impact on the health and well-being of living beings. The world’s population is growing exponentially. To meet the demand of large population, pressure on natural resources or environment has increased. Further, unsustainable extraction of natural resources has led to serious environmental concerns. Forests are deteriorating, plant and animal species are disappearing, wetlands are disappearing, rivers are running dry, glaciers are melting, coral reefs are dying, temperatures are rising and there are more hungry people in the world than ever before.

Global Warming has been a major issue these days. Global warming is the result of increase in earth’s    temperature. This is mainly because of release of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. CO2 is the result of combustion of commercial fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas. CO2 thus released reaches upper layer of the atmosphere and acts as a green house gas. CO2   and other gases such as oxides of sulphur and oxides of Nitrogen allow sunrays to enter the earth but prevent the outgoing radiation. Due to this heat imbalance, temperature of the earth is increasing. This increase in temperature of the earth has defined as Global warming. Because of global warming, global precipitation pattern has changed which has highly affected global food production affecting poor people severely.

Loss of biodiversity is another serious concern for the current environment. It takes millions of year to form a species through the process of evolution and co-evolution. However, because of human activities, species extinction rate has accelerated. Once the species is gone, it is gone good. Air and water pollution due to various gases, toxin, particulates and suspended matter has also increased especially in developing countries. Air pollution is one of the major causes of chronic respiratory diseases and water pollution is the major cause of various water borne diseases such as diarrhea, pneumonia etc.

Soil pollution due to increasing use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers in the name of scientific agriculture has been the burning issue. Ground water pollution due to infiltration of polluted leach-ate has affected the health of people who consume underground water. Residue of pesticides and fertilizers are entering our body by consuming food grown on polluted soil through the mechanism of food chain. Noise or sound level in the environment has increased because of use of heavy machinery, equipments, nuclear weapon testing and so on.

There is also positive aspect on the edge of black cloud. Recently G8 leaders have committed to reduce emission of green house gases by 80 % since 2050. More area has designated as conservation areas. Efficient technologies are developing which are environmental friendly. Stricter rules are making for prosperous environment in the present and for the future.
