How To Make and Hang A Tire Swing
Even though summer is over with, it is still a perfect time to make a tire swing. Your kids will have hours of fun on a handmade tire swing for their yard.
First, you will need a few items to begin this project. They are:
- An old tire.
- A tall, thick tree.
- Soap and water to clean the tire.
- A hand drill.
- Sturdy, thick rope.
- Ladder.
- Dirt.
- Rake.
- A plastic tube to stop the rope from fraying.
Now, measure your tree and make sure that there is at least 9' from the branch to the ground. You want to make sure there is enough clearence for the kids and tire.
Next, Clean the tire that you have. Get as much of the dirt and grime off of it. Clean both the outside and the inside, since the kids will be sitting in both places.
Using your drill, drill three holes into the tire, this is for water drainage when it rains. You don't want it to fill with water and break the tree branch.
Now you will prepare your rope. Place the plastic over on the rope and climbing your ladder, lope the rope over the tree branch, making sure that the plastic tube is placed over the branch as well. This will stop the rope from fraying. Take the two ends of the rope that you have now and make a tight square knot or two under neath the branch. So, the plastic tube is on the top of the branch and the knot is underneath now.
With the two pieces of rope, attach to the tire. Make sure that the holes that you drilled are at the bottom. Use a square knot as well when attaching the tire to the rope.
Use the dirt and rake you have and spread underneath the tire and around the surronding swing area for a softer landing. This of course is optional, depending on where your tree is located.
