Thriller – Michael Jackson
He was to his fans the undisputed King of Pop, Rock and Soul. And now he still is the biggest selling artist of all time. It was in 1982 that Michael Jackson gave the music industry the phenomenal album which had the same title as this song.
It was also the first production of the Hollywood movie style video that made him famous and took the Thriller album to over 45 million copies sold world-wide.
With his recent untimely death his music is sure to sell even more and his fan club to increase.
White Christmas – Bing Crosby
Bing Crosby’s White Christmas was not only the first secular holiday tune to do well, it ultimately has become one of the biggest selling records of all time, currently just over 44 million copies have been sold.
Its initial success was attributed to it striking a chord with homesick GI's during the Second World War. It has managed to appear in the Top 40 in an amazing sixteen different years.
Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen
Bohemian Rhapsody is Freddie Mercury at his best. This song has a lot of meaning to it, and a good twist of 70's Rock and opera-style singing. It is definitely worth listening to over and over again.
This is Classic Queen. The single is clearly one of the band's signature songs. Bohemian Rhapsody charted in the U.S. for 17 weeks in 1976, at #9, and also for 13 weeks in 1992, at #2, after the film Wayne's World featured the song.
Stairway to Heaven – Led Zeppelin
Stairway to Heaven was the most famous rock song in the 1970s. No one has equalled Led Zeppelin's accomplishment with this marriage of hard rock and a sort of corny medievalism. It's tremendous.
Stairway to Heaven is still played over 4,000 times a year by the USA's sixty seven largest rock radio stations.
You Raise Me Up – Josh Groban
It is rare to find a song that really moves you in the way that this song does. These are a truly inspirational set of lyrics that are so powerfully sung by Josh Groban.
When I am down, and oh my soul's so weary, when troubles come and my heart burdened be. Then I am still and wait here in the silence until you come and sit a while with me.
You raise me up so I can stand on mountains; you raise me up to walk on stormy seas. I am strong when I am on your shoulders; you raise me up to more than I can be.
The Winner Takes It All – ABBA
The Winner Takes It All, a song recorded by Swedish pop group ABBA.
It is a typical ABBA single; well written, well sung and well produced. It is similar in style to their 1975 hit SOS, but with a less bouncy beat and a theme geared to the after effects of a relationship break up.
The song is nice and delicate and is classic ABBA. It is taken from the Super Trouper album and made UK #1 in August 1980.
Imagine – John Lennon
This is the most influential song of our century. It calls for peace and unity between all mankind no matter what our colour, creed or religion. It has become the mantra for generations and is still really effectively influencing our culture today.
John Lennon asked us all many questions when he wrote this song and made us confront the implications of the answers.
Earth Song – Michael Jackson
With this beautiful song Michael Jackson was able to focus the entire world on the things that we are doing to our planet and ourselves. It has become the anthem for all people in poverty, sickness, climate change and a testament to the unnecessary suffering of people in the world.
It should not go unnoticed that this remarkable artist has two positions in the list of the 10 most listened to popular songs of all time.
Hotel California – Eagles
Hotel California was the title song from the Eagles 1976 fifth album. It is an Eagles classic; one of those songs that gets passed down through the generations. It has a haunting melody and has a sense of nostalgia that is present throughout. Anyone who has listened to Hotel California has remarked on the brilliance of the long guitar play at the end of the song.
Like A Rolling Stone – Bob Dylan
Like A Rolling Stone is a song by American songwriter Bob Dylan and one of his best known and most influential songs.
It was released as a single in 1965, was over six minutes in length and managed to reach #2 in the charts. This was a real departure from the artist’s normal folk music with its harder rock sound.
The song dramatically affected the music world and popular culture, as well as Bob Dylan’s image and iconic status.
