If it takes you over thirty minutes to fall asleep at night and/or you continuously wake up in the middle of the night, you are suffering from the sleep disorder known as insomnia. How can you overcome insomnia ?

There may be many reasons for insomnia. Some may experience stress that keeps them awake, while others may suffer with aches and pains. For women hormones may be at work. Other causes are too much noise in the sleeping environment.

To overcome insomnia, the first thing that should be done is to try to alleviate the stress and aches and pains that may be keeping you up at night.

Here are some other possible ways to overcome insomnia.

Sleep in a room that is quiet and dark and set the thermostat at a comfortable temperature. It is difficult to sleep in a room that is light, noisy, too hot or too cold.

Try to avoid keeping erratic sleeping hours. If you keep regular sleep hours, your body will get into a routine.

Develop an exercise routine. Join a local gym or search the internet for information on exercises that you can do yourself at home.

Have your last meal of the day early in the evening. Avoid eating snacks right before you go to sleep.

Do not drink coffee and other caffeinated beverages, especially at night. Caffeine is a drug that can alter sleep patterns even if taken during the day.

Do not drink beverages of any kind for thirty minutes before your bedtime.

If these solutions to overcome insomnia do not work for you, visit a sleep disorder center in your local area for some professional assistance.

I don’t have problems falling asleep and I always sleep at the same time every night but I always get up in the middle of the night and that’s when it’s difficult for me to get back to sleep and when I do get back to sleep, I’ll wake up very tired. I don’t know if this is some kind of sleep disorder. Have to research more into this. Anyway, great article.
