Changing IP address can help protect your identity and bypass surfing restrictions. Know what your IP address is and how to change it.

What is an IP address?

An IP address is a kind of a name given to your computer with its internet connection. It identifies who you are to the websites you visit. Depending on your ISP (Internet Service Provider), your computer can either have a static IP (which remains the same for a particular user), or a dynamic IP(which changes every tome a user connects to the internet). This article describes how you can change your computer's IP address.

To find out your current IP address, go to http://www.whatsmyip.org/

I: Find Out if You Have a Dynamic or a Static IP

To find out of you have a dynamic IP address or a static one, check out your computer's IP address at http://www.whatsmyip.org/ . Now restart your broadband modem / router, or disconnect and reconnect your internet connection, and open the above site again. If the addresses match, then you have a static IP address. If they don’t then you have a dynamic IP address.

II: Apply one of these methods:

1. If you have a Dynamic IP

For those with a dynamic IP address, you just have to disconnect and reconnect your modem/ internet connection to get a fresh IP address for your computer.

Pros: Fast, easy and reliable way to change IP address.

Cons: The new IP address is also from your service provider and the same location.

2. If you have a Static IP

Request your service provider to change your computer IP address.

Cons: Your service provider may charge you for this.

3. Use an anonymous proxy website, like http://kproxy.com (if your purpose is browsing a website only)

Visit http://www.publicproxyservers.com/proxy/list1.html for a complete list.

Pros: You can visit whatever website you want.

Cons: Can only be used to surf along with your internet browser (not for other uses like torrents).

If you want to download something, there is usually a download limit per file with these sites. So you may want to check the next one as well.

4. Use free privacy software like Privoxy http://www.privoxy.org/

Pros: Extras like ad-blocking
