Treating joint problems in dogs

Many dogs, especially the larger breed dogs can suffer from joint and hip problems. Arthritis and hip dysplasia are very common ailments in dogs. Fortunately there are many treatments to help treat joint problems in dogs.

Joint and hip problems in dogs are common and can occur at any age.  There are many treatments available to treat joint problems in dogs.  It is important to note that you should take your dog to the vet before you begin any treatment plan.  One of the first things you can do to treat joint problems in dogs is try to make sure he doesn't go overboard in his exercise.  Rest is very important in treating joint problems in dogs.  This probably won't be much of a problem, as the hallmark sign of joint problem in dogs is limited mobility and trouble rising.  Another thing you can do to treat joint problems in dogs is providing his a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids.  Omega 3 fatty acids work by decreasing the inflammation that causes joint problems in dogs.

Before you employ this next treatment for joint problems in dogs, check with your vet.  You can give your dog regular aspirin to reduce inflammation and thereby reducing pain.  Your vet will tell you the recommended dosage based on your dog's weight.  Another treatment for joint problems in dogs is giving them supplements containing glucosamine and chondroitin. These supplements also work to help alleviate pain and helping their muscles maintain strengh.

Massaging the affect joint or limb can be very effective in treating joint problems in dogs.  Touch is very healing and the massage will work to increase blood flow.  Slowly incorporate more exercise into your dog's daily routine to maintain his muscle strength as you do not want his muscles to atrophy.  This will only serve to weaken his joints.  Most importantly if your dog is ill or in pain, consult your vet right away.
