Understanding more on Computer software
Basically, there are two kinds of software, the Operating software and Application software. Let us explain each of them to a child.
“Look Dad!, I can draw different shapes with my computer!” my four year old daughter tells me one evening. “That is great software” I replied. “Do you know that drawing different shapes and colors in your computer are just few of the software feature we could use with computers” I further commented. After some moment and few clicks of the mouse, another question pops-up in her mind, “Dad, what is SOFTWARE?” She exclaimed with excitement.
So, I took a chair and seat besides her and explain more about computer software.
Basically, there are two kinds of software, the Operating software and Application software. Operating software enables the computer parts to communicate with each other. Some examples include MS Windows and Linux software. Applications software enables you to work with the computer. They allow you to draw, play computer games, write a letter, or listen to music.
Furthermore, here are some kinds of application software that we use every day:
1. Word Processing Software. This software enables us to create documents, like letters to our friends. Examples of these are MS Word, Word Perfect, Word star and Word pro.2. Graphic Software. This software enables us to create cards, pictures, animations and three dimensional (3D) graphics. Examples of these are Paint brush, Print Shop, Print Artist, Instant Artist and more.3. Spread sheet Software. These software enable us to create and solve number problems. They are commonly used for accounting purposes. Examples of these are MS Excel, Lotus 123 and Quatro.
4. Desktop Publishing Software. These are the software commonly used by publishers for newspaper, magazines and text books. Examples of these include Corel Draw, Page Maker, Paint shop Pro and many more.
5.Database Management Software. These software are used by programmers. They use this program to manage lots of information. Example of these is Dbase, Foxpro, Visual Basic, Turbo Pascal, C and many more.
At her early age, she may not understand a word I’m saying. But I'm sure, many of you do.
