How to get your basic boxing stance

The basic stance is crucial to boxing, putting you in the perfect position for either attack or defense.

First of all stand with your feet together and walk forward 3 steps. The foot in front is your lead foot, the foot behind is your back foot. Now imagine a clock face and put your lead foot at 12 O’Clock. If your back foot is your right then put it at 4, if your back foot is your left then put it 8.

Keeping your feet in the same place, twist slightly so your lead shoulder (same side as your lead foot) is facing forwards. You can change the angle of your feet as long as they stay at 12 and either 4 or 8. Bend your knees ever so slightly and lift the heel of your back foot slightly off the ground, you should now be able to move up and down or sway in any direction just by moving your knees.

Now lower your chin down towards your chest, but leave a gap between chin and chest. The gap size should be so you could hold a tennis ball under your chin but it wouldnt fall out. Make your hands into fists and then touch your cheeks. Keeping the rest of your body still, move your arms in towards your body. Fists should be on cheeks, elbows pointing to floor and the arm and wrist between them straight.

Keeping your arms locked in position, move them so the fists are slightly further away from head but still at the same height, you can now move your head without having to move your hands and vice-versa.

You now have a stable base, you won’t fall over just from being pushed and your hands are in the perfect position to both attack and defend. Make sure you always return to this stance after throwing or blocking punches as it is the perfect position from which to launch most boxing moves. You can now learn to throw and block punches.
