Tennis awards have been given out since several years

Tennis is a very popular game and is watched by millions every year. There are several people who have excelled in it and have earned a lot of praise for their performances and they have been given several prizes and cash rewards. But out of those there are only a handful of tennis players who have succeeded in winning an award for their game.

There are several awards for tennis stars. These include the Best Female Tennis Player ESPY Award and Best Male Tennis Player ESPY Award which have been handed out every year since 1993. These awards are given only to the best performing players in a calendar year. Besides these awards there are also the WTA Awards (Women’s Tennis Association) for women and the ATP Awards (Association of Tennis Professionals) which have been given out to male players since 1977. These awards include several awards like the Player of the Year and Doubles team of the Year (both of which have been presented since 1977), Most improved Player, Most impressive Newcomer, Comeback player of the Year (presented since 1987), Player Service (presented since 1989), Karen Krantzcke Sportsmanship Award by WTA (presented since 1978) and Humanitarian of The Year (presented since 2005). The ATP also presents the ATPWorldTour.com Fans’ Favorite award since 2000, the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship award since 1982 and the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year award since 1990.

Out of these awards there are several people who have won a multiple of these prestigious awards. These include Pete Sampras who won the Best Male Tennis Player ESPY Award 7 times in 8 years between 1994 and 2001. He also won the ATP Player of the year 6 times. Roger Federer has won the ESPY Award since the last 5 years and has also won the ATP Player of the year 4 times. The Female Tennis Player ESPY Award has been won by 4 women thrice. These include Venus Williams and Serena Williams from USA, Steffi Graf from Germany and Maria Sharapova from Russia. Steffi Graf has won the WTA Player of the Year award a record 8 times and Martina Navrátilová has won it 7 times. In recent years the competition in the Women’s singles has been tough so no one has yet eclipsed any of their achievements yet.

Thus there are several Tennis awards that are given out every month which is fine when you see how much of a respected sport it is. People come in millions every year to see the Grand Slams which include Wimbledon, French Open, Australian Open and US Open. The fitness levels of the players has to be unbelievably high to deal with the back to back matches that come their way after just a gap of one or two days. Due to this the players have to practice much in advance and these Tennis awards are given to those who end up above their competitors and thus deserve it. Winning a single prestigious award can change a tennis player’s life forever.
