Now there are two prominent Spawn Defense maps 5.8 series and the 5.0 series. Both are very good. However to my knowledge Spawn Defense on Starcraft Broodwars is an original game not played anywhere else. It involves defending yourself as well as spawning or creating units that will try to get through your enemies defenses. You start with a small income but as you spawn units your income will rise and in the 5.0 version as you kill your income will rise. In both cases it is better to spawn for income then kill. Your goal is to spawn more then your opponent while still defending against what they spawn! All spawn defenses on Battlenet are with either cannons or bunkers. The problem is these will freeze if you place too many on top of each other when stacking. To stack in 5.8 or cannons in general you must turn the lights off in the center after you CTRL+1 your probe (So when you hit 1 it will recall your probe). Then turn lights off and start buildings cannons everywhere. Bunkers generally are made invisible so you can stack with the lights on very easily. The main thing to do in spawn defense on battlenet is to be sure to not spend more then you have to on defense if you leak one or two enemy units it isn't a big deal if it means you had more minerals to spawn units with and therefore create a larger income for the rest of the game. Income is an exponential and general around 20-30% of unit spawn costs. So if you can get ahead by half your opponents income and lose a life or two you will be able to invest more in defense the following rounds while maintaining a higher income to spawn larger amounts when your defense is safer! Be sure to assign any mineral mining units you may get like probes or SCVs by minerals you can to boost you early in the game if not you will fall behind.
Let us travel deeper into the realm of Starcraft Broodwars spawn defense! Generally it is played with 2 players, sometimes 1 and sometimes 3 per team. With 3 one can go completely spawning and income which will put them WAY ahead of the other teams income so they can sunken and spawn harder units much faster. While the other 2 play normally with slightly heavier defenses until the income only gets defense at about 3 times the other teams income. However the more common 2 vs 2 spawn defense requires both to defend as much as they can. To do this the first round should ALWAYS be spawning as much as you possibly can then the second round income should be focused on defense. After that only build defense when the enemy units get close to getting all the way through, until then just spawn like a madman to get your income as high as possible making defending much easier when you can build 10-20 bunkers or cannons a turn without really reducing your spawn.
While defending with 2 people per team spawn defense be sure to get one to take the front or top and one on the bottom or back. This will make your bunkers or cannons less likely to freeze on you and keep your defense more solid if one leaks the second can stop! This is vital as if something goes wrong and a single unit gets through it needs a second line to kill it instead of taking a life due to bad cannon/bunker placement. Also when defending there are things you can do to make your defense better once you have tons of cannons or max bunkers. Bunkers are very simple, just upgrade at the engineering bay just like any other starcraft broodwars game. In the cannon versions there is a different way to upgrade. You must build a robotics factory which gives you a drone. You can then use the drone on the creep at the bottom to create spores and sunkens which are much more powerful and much less likely to freeze. These also are useful against units with defense as they will generally walk through mountains of 10 attack cannons the first units to make a mockery of your cannons would likely be zerglings with 6 armor each cannon hit only does 4 damage, sunkens are practically REQUIRED to kill anything higher then zergling. You can stack sunkens and spores but it is very difficult to do as you have to hotkey each drone then place it in the dark and then turn the lights on and turn it into a sunken using shift to select it. Really not worth it if you have space anywhere with creep. I have only had to stack sunkens one time and it was an exceptional game between pros.
The killing blow should be dealt with 3-4 rounds income saved up. If that means your enemies income will catch up to yours in that time then you need to keep getting income until you can save a few rounds income without falling behind. Once you do this you should spawn the strongest unit you can that has armor equal to or higher to their marine upgrades or cannon attacks. Generally in 5.8 this is zerglings before they sunken in others it is generally some type of high armor air. Make sure to spawn as many as you can to overwhelm them all at once. If not the defenses will slowly pick them off one by one if they are not close enough together.
