Your complete guide to Evolves on Starcraft Broodwars Battlenet style.

Evolves.

Evolution, also known as evolves is a game where you normally have 2 science vessels, one a hero and one not so you can more easily tell which spawn which unit when you reach a level where you get anti air and anti ground only units at the same time. Generally speaking the anti air only will come from the hero and the anti ground only will spawn from the non hero. Now the science vessels are merely your spawn point for your units which you can move around all you like. Your bunker as well as your opponents is your main objective while playing evolves on starcraft broodwars. You do not want your bunker to die, this means your main objective is to kill your enemies bunker. This is made rather challenging in the beginning by the marines or ghosts you start out with, you either have them spawned as your first 4 units OR you get to choose them in the middle I would suggest 2 ghosts and 2 marines if you get the choice to keep them from harassing early on. Once you have chosen your bunker defenders you get your masser unit. What on starcraft broodwars is that you may ask? Well a masser is simply a unit that can move from one beacon to another. When it hits the beacon ALL your units that are not rendered immobile by either a bunker or sieging for a tank etc. will move tot he target area. If you send your masser to the teal beacon it will mass your units towards teals bunker. This makes evolves a favorite for people who simply like to bash things to bits on starcraft broodwars without having to build them or even command them with more then one click! Your masser cannot die which is nice but can be hidden by air making it hard to find so I suggest control+1 it at the start to avoid this common evolves problem. I will now go deeper into strategy for Starcraft Broodwars evolves.

Firstly we will cover what to do at the start so you do not fall behind. In 99% of the Starcraft Broodwar evolves games I have played you start with Zerglings then you move up to zealots then firebats and the fourth level is firebats. The thing is if you are more then 1 level behind by level 4 you are pretty much done you need to reach goliaths about the same time as everyone else. Once you have your bunker guards you should hokey CTRL+2 both science vessels together. It doesn't matter if you control a zergling with them as well hard not to, but it will die shortly and remove it from the 2 command group. Now you want to send all your zerglings to one side or the other of the center. Send your science vessel spawners with your zerglings so when you upgrade you instantly have the better units in combat to kill the enemies weaker units. Now this is important! DO NOT SAVE UP ZERGLINGS. You will simply get wasted by anything about zealots which only takes about 50-100 kills to get to. If you hold off on combat and your opponents level past level 2 and you are still on zerglings you are never going to catch up. Battlenet is very competitive when it comes to any game especially use map settings like evolves, you will be shown no mercy if you fall behind. To this end if you are a good microer and can get your units around with dying in regular games I would suggest you take 2 bunker ghosts out of your bunker and snipe the enemy while your units are already engaged (to avoid them killing your bunker ghosts too easily) This will give you a marked advantage as you are bringing 2 units with one shot one kill weapons onto the battlefield. This will level you faster then your opponent and once you are ahead it is easy to stay there. If your ghosts die then learn from HOW they died and avoid it next time. As you upgrade and you get melee units be sure to keep your science vessels somewhat close to the enemies line so melee units have less distance to cover under fire. Generally once a melee unit reaches a ranged unit the ranged unit doesn't stand a chance. If you get massed by 2 enemy players don't run simply defend yourself the best you can and chances are you will lose all your units but you will come out n top in terms of levels. This will give you a massive advantage that you can exploit into an easy win.

Now that you can play well at the start we will go deeper into strategy once again. As you progress through the levels you will notice as you hit the masser for ground units they will drop into a line as they move towards your target. This turns them into fodder when they hit the enemies defenses as they die 1 at a time without barely firing a shot. You can avoid this by massing to a closer target somewhere near your intended target then massing your target as it will keep the distance to drop into a line minimal. A second thing is to mass to a target to the right or left or past your target on the right or left then as your troops are in a line beside your target mass the target and create a line that runs into your target all at once! This can be a devastating blow to an opponent if you do it properly and obliterate them in about 30 seconds. This should give you unit superiority as well as level superiority. Evolves on Starcraft Broodwars has evolved in and of itself into a tactical mess where any single mistake can be your undoing. Hoe would you suggest countering someone who is going to broadside you with a line? Well mass directly into it so the bulk of your units hit the weaker middle causing the ends to collapse inwards. This scenario would give you 2 units attacking their 1 unit while you are breaking the line and likely 3 to 1 when the line collapses. If you find yourself being torn apart by your opponents base one of the things I love about Starcraft Broodwars is the Allie option! If you do not have enough units or powerful enough units at this stage of play and you are surrounding your enemies bunker, DON'T give him the free kills, Allie him and mass back to your base and wait until it is worth going after his units for the points again. Once you have enough points to get good units preferably air, mass them then attack his base in one fell swoop eliminate him. Generally Bunkers have 5 thousand HP and inifinite armor meaning each shot from a unit does .5 damage, 2 shots is a full damage point. This is standard in all Starcraft Broodwar games. When a units armor exceeds the aggressors attack ability it will reduce damage to .5.

Now to address the issue of what units are best in Evolves for Starcraft Broodwars. Playing on Battlenet presents new challenges to Broodwars. The main one is certain units which are mega better then others. For instance Dragoons get massacred by Mutalisks. This is partially due to the Dragoons proneness to glitching out and not shooting while the Mutalisks massacre them without taking a single hit back. Secondly Mutalisks hit 3 targets per shot doing less and less damage but still damaging or killing in some cases more then 1 units. The third advantage is that Mutalisks are air and can stack when they mass so 50 Mutalisks may be firing at a single Dragoon which is very unfair for the poor Dragoon. However Some things such as Goliaths are fairly good against Mutalisk and air in general. This brings me to the conclusion that if you are going to mass any particular unit make it Mutalisks or Goliaths that you amass a large amount of before you attempt to completely obliterate your opponent in one fell swoop on battlenet. However the same applies to the enemy. Even if you are behind you can easily take the lead by out planning them. If they have mutalisks and you have dragoons it may be best to just constantly attack and die so they level and get something that isn't as good as Mutalisk. This way once you reach Mutalisks you can save as many as possible then massacre whatever ground unit your opponent upgraded to. They won't mind you feeding them unless they know Mutalisks massacre ground of Goliaths slaughter air. They will think they are winning until you hit them with all your Mutalisks and their army literally dies in a single massive wave. Similarly a good unit to save up is Battle cruisers as they easily mass and do decent damage as well as having decent range. They do well against everything but archons and Mutalisks. Archons are good but not good to mass they are good to have and drop directly under air as it will hit 50-200 units at a time if you place the spawn properly.

Ending a game of evolves on Starcraft Broodwars is fairly simple if you have the upper hand as you should by the point your ready to end. Simply mass whatever air unit you have at 5-6 levels higher while trying to reduce the enemy units without loosing too many of yours. This leaves their base open when you are ready to attack and kill their bunker. A failed attack will benefit them greatly so I recommend being sure you have enough to take all 5k Hit points from the bunker unless you get it to red HP so it will burn within a couple minutes all you have to do is survive. Be sure to spawn ground units inside the circle attacking the bunker to do maximum damage. I also sometimes allie the enemy get on top of their bunker then unallie it does much more damage from units like Marines or Goliaths which will make a ring if you don't do that.
