Migraine Headaches are probably the #1 cause of people calling in sick to work and account for thousands of lost hours to employers annually. But there are things that you can do to reduce that migraine or cluster headache and possibly eliminate it all together.

If you are like me a Migraine or Cluster Headache can come on at any time.

The effects of these types of headaches can be devastatingly severe for those who suffer from chronic Migraines

But if you are one of the lucky ones who gets a pre-migraine aura you can sometimes stop it in it's tracks before it ever gets hold of you and wipes you out for the rest of the day

Things You'll Need:

  • Strong coffee
  • enteric coated aspirin
  • Tylenol
  • Ice
  • dark room
  1. Step 1

First thing is to listen to your body and learn if your body sends you a warning that a Migraine, optic-migraine, or cluster headache is imminent.

For many sufferers there is a pre-migraine Aura that warns of the impending attack. This aura can be as simple as feeling a little light headed to more complex symptoms such as lightning bolts, flashing lights or just feeling like you suddenly have spots on your glasses that you just can't seem to remove.

  1. Step 2

At the first sign of the Migraine, and that means the pre-migraine aura if you get them do the following.
Make a strong cup of coffee, take 2 aspirin and 2 regular strength Tylenol this gives you the fast equivalent of some over the counter Migraine medications.
For myself I try to drink 2 strong cups of coffee with the aspirin and Tylenol to give my system an extra kick.

The caffeine in the coffee acts as a vaso-stimulant which rapidly opens up the blood vessels to the brain, this helps get the medication quickly to the nerves where you will soon be experiencing the severe pain from. The Tylenol and Aspirin then can work together to knock down the Migraine by directly blocking the pain impulses and reducing the inflammation in the nerves that are triggering the Migraine or Cluster Headache.

  1. Step 3

Make 2 bags of crushed ice or use a zippy bag with rice in it that has been placed in the freezer. (I keep several of these on hand at home) and place one on your forehead and the other behind your neck as close to the back of your skull as possible and lay down in a dark quiet room.

  1. Step 4

Typically, if you can begin treatment of the Migraine or Cluster Headache before it hits using the above methods, you will find that your headache will be less severe, shorter in duration or not even actually hit you at all!

Tips & Warnings

  • Do the above at the first hint of a pre-migraine aura and odds are you may not even experience the migraine.
  • Optic-Migraines can be scary and may not even cause pain. They are the visual example of a migraine by which you may see bright lightning, flashes and even muscle spasms in the eyes and eyelids without actual pain.
