Pumpkin - A Remedy For Canine Constipation
It is almost as painful for the owner to watch, as it is for their dog, as they pace, circle and strain to have a bowel movement.
All puppies and dogs suffer from constipation at one time or another.
Change of diet, surgery, prostate problems, tumors, kidney disease, a perineal hernia, too many biscuits or treats, eating non-food items (paper, socks) hairballs, medications, matted hair around the anus or bacterial infections can sometimes cause canine constipation.
Certain small breeds such as Maltese, Shih Tzus, Yorkies, and Chihuahuas are sometimes prone to constipation. It is also fairly common in older dogs, giant breeds and dogs that are not walked or exercised enough.
A simple solution to the problem is plain canned pumpkin or pureed baby food pumpkin. Pumpkin is high in fiber and water content...two of the most important ingredients in keeping your dog regular.
If your dog weighs under 15 lbs, 1-2 teaspoons per feeding should help. Dogs weighing up to 35 lbs, try 1-2 tablespoons per feeding. For dogs over 50 lbs, 2-5 tablespoons per feeding, should help soften their stools.
As soon as you notice they are having fewer problems, cut back or discontinue using the pumpkin.
If this is something you deal with on a "regular" basis, no pun intended, here is a suggestion.
Go to your local dollar store; pick up an inexpensive ice cube tray. Sometimes you can find them in different sizes. Measure out the amount you need into the ice cube tray and freeze it. You can later pop them out and store them in a freezer bag or container. That way you can just grab what you need, when you need it. Defrost it for a few minutes and add it to your dog's next meal. It won't hurt to moisten their dry food with water, if they are strickly on a dry food diet.
Take preventative measures if possible. Make sure your puppy or dog has plenty of fresh water, walk and exercise them for at least an hour a day.
