Making your own trail mix can not only be delicious, but also extremely fun. That's because you are in complete control of the ingredients that you put into the trail mix. Even better, you can make this out of "bits and pieces" of food items you have around the house but didn't know what to do with.

Too often when we decide we want a snack we find that there is nothing in the house. Well instead of heading out to the local store to buy something, try making it yourself. Making your own trail mix can not only be delicious, but also extremely fun. That's because you are in complete control of the ingredients that you put into the trail mix. Even better, you can make this out of "bits and pieces" of food items you have around the house but didn't know what to do with.

  • Look around your kitchen and find any item that you think would be good in a trail mix. Items include: cereal, granola, marshmallows, nuts, dried fruit (raisins, cranberries, etc), pretzels, chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, popcorn. There really are no limits to what you can include but stay away from items that need refrigeration. Other than that, be creative!
  • Pour all ingredients into a bowl or large plastic baggie. Mix thoroughly.
  • For added flavor, add a small amount of confectioners sugar (about 1/4 of a cup). You do not need to add any liquids, since you are just dusting the ingredients, not coating them.
  • Store mix in a cool dry location.

This is not only fun to make, but if you store it in a plastic baggie, it's also easy to take with you on road trips or to the movies.
