How to Travel Around Singapore on A Budget
Planning to go to Singapore? Then read this, you will save hundreds of dollars on traveling expenses and shopping
Every year, many tourists flock to Singapore but how many of them know where the best shopping place or food is? Not many, I believe.
Other than those who fly to Singapore regularly, many people miss out the best Singapore has to offer. One good thing about Singapore is its public transportation. There's MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) that could get you to any major cities in Singapore conveniently. You have buses that could take you to almost anywhere in Singapore without much hassle. And you also have an efficient taxis service; but of course you have to pay more. If you are able to give names of places more known locally to the taxi drivers they can even take you the remotest place in Singapore.
In Singapore, most shopping centers are located near MRT or directly above them. If you're a shopping junkie, then hop on a train and use the map pasted in the train cabins as a guide and you’d reach the shopping center of our choice in no time. You could also go online and search for Singapore MRT for a more detailed view of the services offered and the description of interesting places in Singapore.
If it’s the first time you come to Singapore, your first stop obviously will be the Changi Airport. If you carry small luggage you can take MRT instead of a taxi and save 20 Singapore dollars. If you take a taxi during peak periods, you need to pay extra charges even just to pass by certain areas like ERP (Electronic Road Pricing) and CBD (Central Business District).
Here’s a list of shopping centers that I’d recommend you going (so you can shop and save):
- White Sands
- Tampiness Mall - there are three big shopping malls
- Parco Bugis- walk across street to Bugis Village
- Clarke Quay-Clarke Quay Central - walk a distance to go to Singapore river boat or visit various clubbing spots and pubs
- Tiong Bahru Plaza- slightly smaller for shoppers but check out the local food
- China Town-you could get lost in China Town, so grab a mini map version of China Town and start from there
- Vivo City- take a bus opposite Vivo to Sentosa, a map is needed when you reach there as there are different colored buses for different spots
- Kranji Turf Club- good seafood can be found there, take a look at the horse club maybe you could make some winnings!
- Lot One in Choa Chu Kang – a small sized mall
- West Mall in Bukit Batok – small sized mall
This is just a short list of the shopping centers where you can get good deals and the best value for your every penny.
For food, I’d suggest you to head for Geylang; it has the best food in Singapore. If you have problem finding the place, take MRT, alight at Kallang Station and ask for directions as you need to walk a distance. Some popular food you can find there are tiger prawn noodles, hot pot, frog porridge, dim sum and many more. If you can tolerate durians, you are at the right place. Geylang is famous for durians and it has the best variety of durians you can find in Singapore.
That’s it! You can save hundreds of dollars of travelling expenses just by taking MRT. In fact, you can save on any destination. Rather than taking a taxi direct to your destination, take MRT instead, alight at any station near your destination and then take a taxi.
