September is the 9th month of the year in the Gregorian calendar. It has 30 days. Autumns begin in the Northern

Hemisphere about September 23, at the autumnal equinox, when the day and night are of equal length. Spring

begins in the Southern Hemisphere at the same time.

Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year’s Day usually occurs in September. September is the harvest time in much

of the Northern Hemisphere, and in many areas agricultural fairs are held to celebrate the gathering of the crops.

September was the 7th month in the Roman calendar. The name September stems from the Latin word septem

(seven). In September the Romans held athletic games in honor of Jupiter, their supreme god. The Anglo-Saxons

used the name Gerst-monath (Barley month) for September because they harvested barley during this period.
