A balanced practice of Hatha yoga should always end with a final relaxation. This is the part where the practitioner lies motionless on his or her back with eyes closed, earning it the name Corpse Pose or savasana in its native Sanskrit.

Savasana is one of the most - if not the most - important yoga poses, especially if you practice a very dynamic style of yoga that consumes a lot of energy. It is very rewarding as it allows your body to rest after a rigorous workout while encouraging your mind to practice being present.

This pose can look deceptively easy - and in fact, some find it easier than others. There is a reason it is often called "a little death" - it is the ultimate practice surrender.

For first timers, especially those with naturally busy minds, this pose can be surprisingly difficult. Very often, once we stop moving around or focusing on our physical body, our mind begins to wander and our body starts to fidget. We then become distracted from the peace available deep within our resting body.

But with practice, the mind and body settle down more easily.

You should spend at least five to 10 minutes in this pose at the end of an asana practice. Take your time and allow each part of the body to relax in turn.

When you become very relaxed, you might find yourself dozing off a little (it's not uncommon to hear someone snoring during savasana in a yoga class). But ideally you should be very relaxed - on the verge of sleeping - without actually falling asleep.
