Getting paid to write can be a very good way of earning an income from the web. There are many sites offering opportunities that you can take advantage of. Or you can start your own site with your own articles.

Not long ago, a whole new industry that pays you to write sprang up online.  In this industry, you have webmasters paying you to write articles, and you also have websites hungry for content and will compensate you for your articles.  There are also sites that will list the articles that you want to sell, and still others that will pay you for posting to your blog.

Writing online content is not the same as writing in the offline world.  The following is a short summary of writing in the online writing industry.

Can Anybody Write For Cash?

You don't have to be an established writer to have somebody pay you to write online.  What you do need is the ability to convey your ideas in a clear and concise fashion, and you should have good grammar and spelling as well.

What Do I Write?

Other than the obvious no-nos, you are free to write what strikes your fancy.  But you will have some boundaries based on your project and payment model.  For example, if you are writing for a site about dogs, then you obviously can't write about aeroplanes.  Or, if you are writing for pay-per-click revenue, then you would want to go for subjects that have a high value per click.

Do I Get Paid Per Article?

Offline, you will normally get paid by the article, or by the column.  There will be some cases in which you will get paid through royalties.  Online, there are a lot of different ways by which you can get paid.  The following are the more common ways through which you can get paid:

  • Paid Per Article Or Post. Some sites may pay you a dollar or two for each post you make to your blog.  Or there are some sites or webmasters that will pay you for your article, although normally, the deal might be in blocks of 5 or 10 articles each time.
  • By The Number Of Words In The Article. Some sites or webmasters will pay you based on the number of words in your article or blog post.  While rates vary widely, I would expect that a rate of one to two cents per word to be representative.
  • Paid Per Thousand Views. The site will publish your article, and do its part in publicizing your article on their network.  On your part, you are encouraged to do your own promotions.  You will be paid based on the number of impressions your article generates.  At the present rates, you can expect about $1 to $2 per thousand page views.
  • By AdSense And Other Ads. You publish your article on the site.  Along with your article, the site will display pay-per-click ads like Google AdSense and Kontera ads.  Some sites will also display ads from sites like eBay and Amazon.  A certain percentage of the ads impression will have your tracking code, and that is how you get paid for your article.

Conclusion

And in conclusion, the Internet is changing everyday and the paid to write industry will probably change along with it.  It is a comparatively new industry, with a lot of the demand coming from the SEO sector.  In the future, as the search engines develop new algorithms, demand for articles for SEO purposes will likely change.

Thanks for your comment, falco.  But there is also another angle to article writing in which the article is used mainly for increasing the search engine rankings and not really meant for “human consumption”.  :)
