At the 19th International World Peace Conference this week in Huntsville, Alabama, delegates from around the world will watch as three world-peace advocates from different continents, races, and religions will join hands to remove a 40-inch “sword of war” from the throat of sword swallower Dan Meyer. Meyer plans to use this to illustrate how nations should work together and take a hands-on approach to achieve world peace. The sword-swallowing exhibition will emphasize the final point in Meyer's speech, "Sword of War, Sword of Peace."  At the conclusion of the demonstration, the sword drawn from Meyer's throat will be presented to IAEWP President Dr. Charles Mercieca as a "Sword of Peace."

The International Association for Educators for World Peace (IAEWP) was founded in Oslo Norway in 1977 by educators who wanted to work together for world peace. The organization has 90,000 members in 100 countries and is dedicated to the United Nations' goals of Peace Education, Environmental Protection, Human Rights, and Disarmament. IAEWP delegates from around the globe will meet at A&M University's Knight Center to discuss how using religion, arts and entertainment, healing, and even sword swallowing can help promote world peace.

As noted in Sword Swallower Dan Meyer Has Got Talent!, Alabama resident Dan Meyer, President of the Sword Swallowers Association International, is a multiple Guinness World Record holder and Ripley's Believe It or Not performer best known for swallowing swords underwater in a tank of sharks and stingrays. Meyer was also recently featured on several episodes of the 2008 NBC reality show "America's Got Talent," where he made it to the quarter finals. Meyer has been developing his unusual talent since 1997 (see Interview with Dan Meyer, Sword Swallower).

The International World Peace Conference will run though Friday, July 31 at A&M University in Huntsville, Alabama. Findings and recommendations from the conference will be presented at the World Peace Congress in Seoul South Korea October 29-31, 2009.
