How to manage your mp3 music collection on your PC and your IPod (or other MP3 device)

I looked around at the piles and piles of CD's I had and how I could never find the one I was looking for when I wanted it, and thought there must be an easier way to manage and organise my music.

Sure, there is, rip them all to MP3s.  So tell us something knew I hear you shout! Well, even after doing that, I was then left with many gigabytes worth of music on my PC.

In folders under artist name, some under album name, some nested in several folders, some in CD 1, CD 2 etc.  Plus, the ones I had downloaded through ITunes and other online stores were not in the same structure as these.  Not only that, tag info was missing on a lot of the files, as well as Album art, and generally I had all my music in a right mess on my PC.

I then searched the web for a tool to help sort it out and tried out quite a few, including ITunes, some were ok, but all lacked in features one way or another.  For instance, some organised the folders, but no option to add tag information.  Whereas others, allowed me to transfer music to my IPod, but not to my Mobile phone.  What I wanted was one piece of software that could do it all, as well as the obvious, let me play my MP3's on my PC as well.

I then stumbled across MediaMonkey! The free version had some of the features I was after, but the paid for Gold version sounded like it did exactly what I was after, including features such as:

  • MP3 Music Player with Auto-DJ & Party Mode
  • CD Ripper and Audio Converter
  • Auto Renamer and File Organiser
  • Auto Tag Editor with Album Art Lookup
  • Playlist Manager
  • File Monitor to auto update my music library
  • Unlimited MP3 Encoding and on-the-fly conversions and leveling.

It seemed a reasonable price compared to other software I had tried out, so I bought a copy and have never looked back.  It really is a great tool, and I have sorted my entire music collection out with this, all now fully tagged with Album Art.  I also use this to manage my IPod and the music on my Mobile Phone.
