The best men's winter coat to wear outside while shoveling snow isn't necessarily the best to wear when your out with your girl for a night out on the town.

The first thing you need to understand is the difference between a jacket and a coat. A jacket rests at the hips and is just about useless when it comes to keeping you warm sincethe cold wind can go right up your waste line. a coat goes down to about the knees. Also, it is difficult or impossible to wear a thick sweater under a jacket. Jackets are better for the spring or fall, not the dead of winter.

Styling is important. A huge parka may keep you toasty, but might not portray the best image for the office or a night out on the town. Use the parka for shoveling snow or daily activities, dressier men's winter coats are better for business or pleasure situations. Consider a Pea coat, or officers top coat, they are classy and timeless.

The material is important of course. Cashmere. although great at keeping you warm, is expensive and not very durable. Wool men's winter coats, preferably with a layer of thinsulate are the best. Leather men's winter coats look great but don't breathe very well, and are sometimes difficult to 'seal' if they have buttons, so keep that in mind.

Consider the fit, when you go shopping for men's winter coats wear a sport coat or thick sweater since on the coldest days or at work that's what you'll be wearing. When trying on men's winter coats, move around and check for binding, try to simulate the activities you'll be doing in it, whether shoveling the snow or even just tying your shoes, you need to be able to move around in it. Men's winter coats should be comfortable, not uncomfortable.  If it doesn't fit right, it probably won't seal right as well.

Remember, when all is said and done, you have to look good, feel good and stay warm! There are many styles and materials of men's winter coats out there so stay open minded and consider your options.
