The BEST places to visit in Melbourne
Come one, come all. Even if you've never set foot in Melbourne, this should give you reason to come. Take it from me, a Melbournian through and through.
THE BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN MELBOURNE
- MCG
The world’s greatest sporting city needs to have at least a half decent arena. And it does. The Melbourne Cricket Ground is an open-roofed, year long used venue that boasts a heritage as rich as dark chocolate and a location that’s pure gold. It’s an easy travel point as it sits less than 500m from the nearest train station, making it a great supporter-thriving venue. It is most commonly used for AFL football (in winter) and the cricket (in summer). Although it had also been used for the Commonwealth and Olympic Games and various large sporting events, such as international soccer matches. The greatest value of the ‘G is the capacity. Once or twice a year the stadium fills to capacity – a whopping 100,000+ seats – and the vibrancy and energy is astounding. I recommend you visit but make sure you go and watch something too. There are guided tours and various sporting museums too.

2. Eureka Tower
Even from a massive distance does the Eureka Tower stand out. It reaches 300 metres (or nearly 100 feet) into the air. It is the largest skyscraper in the southern hemisphere and towers over the other buildings in the city. When visiting, tourists, or everyday citizens, can take an elevator ride to the very top level and experience the amazing – the Eureka Skydeck. It is basically a glass room that overhangs the edge of the building, giving everybody inside a 360 degree view of the city. I recommend that you visit it at night, once the lights and buzz of the city is awoken. The Yarra River which trails along behind it can be seen for thousands of metres into the distance. Located close to the stations, it’s a great venue. It is also close to other entertainment complexes like Crown Hotel and the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.
3. Royal Botanical Gardens
Although less well known then the other venues mention, the Botanical Garden add to the green, natural feel of Melbourne that make it a unique city. Earlier on, Victoria has been labeled the ‘Garden State’ and the name has stuck. Rightly so. The park is home to many events and festivals. It’s also a great point for any exercise buffs around. The infamous track, lasting 3.9 km and involving a 400 metre, lactic-acid-making hill, will push every ounce of energy from runners, riders and walkers, as well as offering great views. Once a full circuit is completed, the many sides of Melbourne are revealed. It’s a great way to see the sights and get fit.
