How to Use Outdoor Lighting to Add Drama to Your Landscape

Understand the types of landscape lighting:
* Low Voltage lights are connected to a low voltage cable and transformer and are plugged into an outdoor outlet. They offer powerful light.
* Solar Powered lights do not require cables but don't have the power to flood light
* Get the best lighting effects by using both

Take a picture of your property. Cut the picture into four sections and enlarge each section on a copy machine. You want the BIG picture.

Do you have open, shapely trees on your property? Uplights will define trees and produce dramatic shadows.

Older, fuller trees will cast lovely shadows when downlights are installed.

A walkway is safer and more impressive when path lights define it.

Is the side yard gloomy? A wall mounted flood light with a motion sensor will bring it to life and let you know if someone is in your yard.

Is your house made of brick or stone? A back light will emphasize its texture as well as provide general area lighting.

Work with the picture of your home. Mark out those areas that you want to shed a little light on and make your lighting plan.

Installing solar lighting is not difficult, but unless you have electrical training, you will want a licensed electrician to install your outdoor lighting. Schedule three lighting contractors to come to your home on the same day and at the same time. Explain your lighting plan and ask for written estimates including the model numbers of the fixtures they suggest.
