How to Choose the Best Coat for Winter Weather
When cold weather returns, you want to be ready. Here's how to choose a quality winter coat to stay warm and fashionable this year.
As the days become shorter and the cold winter winds begin to blow, you're going to want to bring your winter coat out of hiding. If your current coat selections have seen better days, it may be time to shop for a new one. Choosing a quality winter coat is an important decision since you'll be wearing it frequently during the months when temperatures dip below freezing. Plus, a stylish winter coat can pull together an outfit as well as hide the sweat clothing you've put on for a quick trip to the grocery store. Here's what to keep in mind when choosing a coat:
Choose a coat for warmth
If you live in an area where temperatures frequently drop below freezing, you're going to want to choose a winter coat with good insulation. If you're looking more for functionality rather than fashion, a goose-down coat may be your best choice. Goose-down coats have become much more stylish in the last few years. Plus, they offer the ultimate protection against the elements. If you live in a cold area and want a coat you can wear to work, you may want to consider investing in a cashmere or camel hair coat which will provide both warmth and style.
Choose your coat size carefully.
If you live in a cold area, you'll probably be layering your winter clothing to give provide insulation from the elements. When choosing a coat, you may want to select a size larger to accommodate the extra clothing you'll be wearing underneath. If you're trying on winter coats on a warmer day, you may get a false impression of fit if you're dressed lightly. When in doubt, go up a size.
Consider your color options.
If you can't afford to have multiple winter coats, it's best to opt for a black or neutral shade of coat so it will coordinate with most items in your wardrobe. If you choose a coat in a bright shade, you may be restricted as to what you can wear it with and where you can wear it.
Consider how many pockets you're going to need.
Some coats come with decorative pockets that have no function. This is usually found on coats of lesser quality. If you routinely carry your billfold or other items in your pockets to avoid carrying a purse, be sure you choose a winter coat that has deep pockets for your belongings. It's also comforting to be able to slide your hands into deep pockets on a blustery day.
Do you have pets?
If you have pets that have a tendency to shed, you may want to avoid choosing a coat that has material that attracts hair. Likewise, if you have a black dog, don't select a white coat which will show dog hair even more. Opt for a coat shade that matches his fur so it will be less visible. Also consider choosing a slick material for your coat such as leather or goose-down which naturally repels hair.
Consider how much you want to pay.
You may want to pay a bit more to get a quality winter coat. Remember, you're going to be wearing it almost every day and it's the first thing people will see when you walk through the door. If chosen wisely, a winter coat can be a good investment that will last many years.
Choosing a coat that's both functional and fashionable can be a challenge, but you'll be rewarded when the cold, bitter winds of January arrive and you're securely bundled in your new winter coat.
