Whenever you are in the presence of a group of people, there are certain rules of etiquette to which you must comply if you don’t want to be considered rude by the others. This is true of Pilates classes when you are working out with others who are of different ages and come from different walks of life.

Whenever you are in the presence of a group of people, there are certain rules of etiquette to which you must comply if you don’t want to be considered rude by the others. This is true of Pilates classes when you are working out with others who are of different ages and come from different walks of life. You should try to make friends with everyone in the class even if you joined with two or three of your friends. It is not good etiquette to keep to yourself or to form a little clique among the class members.

Although the music in a Pilates class is tuned so that it doesn’t drown out the voice of the instructor, it is very likely that there are people in the class who may find it hard to hear the instructor. Talking in class – any class – is seen as rude and the same thing applies to a Pilates workout with others. You should not talk to those around you because, not only does this interrupt their routine, but it is also distracting for everyone else, including the instructor who may feel it is necessary to try to talk above you.

Turn off your cell phone before you start your Pilates class. You should inform your friends and family about the time of the class and ask them not to call. If they do call and get your voice mail, then they can leave a message and you can return their call. If you feel that it is absolutely necessary to take a call during the class, keep the phone in your pocket on vibrate. When a call does come through, politely excuse yourself and take the call outside the room. It is also considered good etiquette to inform the instructor that you are expecting a call and that it may come through during class.

There are many people who have allergies to scents. When you are in the midst of a group of people working out, there is no doubt that after a while there will be a scent of perspiration. You should not try to mask this scent by wearing perfumes because it may be harmful to others in the class. Wearing perfume gives off a scent, but as you work out and your body heats up, the scent will also become more intense. If you are worried about the scent of sweat coming from you, take the time to shower before class and then take another shower after the class is over. Not only is this good etiquette for Pilates classes, but it is good hygiene as well.

Don’t try to hold the attention of the instructor so that no one else in the class gets any personal attention. Take your turn and ask questions only when they are needed. By using this rule of etiquette you will get your fair share of attention and instruction and everyone will benefit from taking the class.

You should maintain a professional stance as a member of the class and not resort to gossiping about others, such as their size or the type of clothing they wear. Everyone is there for the same reason you are – to get a great workout and to become fit.
