There is a lot of information on the internet about Adsense but most of it is aimed at people who are already using AdSense to help them increase revenue, etc. This article is mainly for intending and beginning AdSense users although, current users will definitely find it helpful in some way. (If you already use AdSense, skip to the “Maximize Your AdSense Revenue” section).

What is Google Adsense?

Google AdSense or AdSense is part of Google’s advertising program where website or blog owners can earn revenue from having Google ads displayed on their web pages. A website or blog owner that participates in AdSense is called a Publisher.

How Do You Make Money On AdSense?

AdSense offers the following options to publishers.

  1. AdSense for Content: This is the basic option. Under this option, Google displays two ad types which match the content on a publisher’s website: cost-per-thousand impressions (CPM) ads and cost-per-click (CPC) ads.

-          CPM: An ad impression occurs every time a particular ad is displayed on a web page. Under this a publisher is paid for every ad impression on his web site. The payment for an ad impression is calculated by dividing the advertiser’s set cost by a thousand.

-          CPC: Under this, a publisher is paid every time that a visitor clicks on an ad on the publisher’s website or blog.

Advertisers can choose to display their adverts as CPM ads or CPC ads, and a publisher earns revenue depending on which type is displayed.

  1. AdSense for Search: This lets visitors search the web using a Google search box directly from a publisher’s site. A publisher earns money when visitors click on ads that accompany search results.
  2. AdSense for Mobile Content: This is the same as for adsense for content but is targeted at mobile websites which can be accessed from phones.
  3. AdSense for Feeds: This option allows publishers to display targeted Google ads in their feeds. Ads are either CPM or CPC.
  4. AdSense for Domains: This allows a publisher with an unused domain (web address) or a domain that has no content to display search results, ads and other content. Ads are targeted to the domain name and a user earns when visitors click on the ads.
  5. AdSense for Video (Beta): This is for publishers with video content. Targeted CPM or CPC ads are displayed based on the signals from videos on the site. This is currently in beta mode and is only available for sites in English with traffic mainly from the United States.

Basic Tips

  1. Create a website or blog with targeted content. Ensure that your website or blog contains quality information that people are looking for online. Make sure the information on the web page matches the displayed title.
  2. Ensure that your web pages load quickly and easily. Nothing puts off a visitor like a website with pages that take too long to load.
  3. Index your website with several search engines. This entails submitting the URL (web address) of your website to search engines such as Google, Yahoo! Search, Bing, Ask.com, etc. Search engines usually add new sites automatically as they crawl the web; index your site to ensure it has been added and that it will come up in search results.
  4. Place multiple ad units on your web pages. Having at least three ad units in optimal positions is likely to lead more clicks than a single ad unit.
  5. Create channels to track the performance of specific pages and ad units. URL channels track the performance of specific pages or the all the pages on the website. Custom channels track the performance of specific ad units.
  6. Select ad colors that match the pages on your website or blog. Doing this makes visitors more likely to click on the adverts on your website
  7. Place ads within and around the text on your website or blog. Placing ads in this position ensures that visitors see them as they peruse the information on your web pages.
  8. Promote your website or blog. Join online forums that discuss the subject on which your website is based, contribute and post links back to your website. Answer questions on sites like Yahoo! Answers about subjects on your websites and post links back to your website.

Advanced Tips

  1. Use Google Analytics (GA). GA is a free service from Google that lets you track visits to your website. It generates detailed statistics such as the number of visitors to your website; sites or search engines from which visitors are referred; and so on. Using GA with Adsense lets users know how many visitors they get and whether they need to improve their websites and promotion techniques.
  2. Use Search Engine Optimization. This is a way to increase the traffic to a website by improving its search engine results. Things A Publisher Should Not Do On AdSense

  1. Do not click on your own ads, ask visitors to click on your ads or enlist family and friends to click on your ads. Do not use automated clicking tools or robots or use paid-to-click (PTC) services. This is known as click fraud. If Google determines that you have been involved in this, your AdSense account will be cancelled and earnings withheld.
  2. Do not trick visitors into visiting your website with page titles and content that do not match. People do not like to be tricked into viewing a website and will exit the page too quickly to even see your ads.
  3. Do not display too many ads before your websites information or content. It is best to place ads within your content.
  4. Do not use illegal SEO techniques such as spamdexing and google bombing. Your site will be removed from a search engine’s index list if you do.
