How to make friends in college
Finishing school is a great achievement and an even more indescribable feeling. But over all this change towers the great excitement, the splendor and the ambiguity of college life. New friends and newer experiences are definitive of college.
There are no surefire ways to make friends, as friendship like love is still a universal mystery. So here are some facts and a few tips you can use.
Facts of college you should keep in mind!
Everyone’s new – It’s a fact, the first year students are all new. So don’t worry about being new, in your first year it’s a common feeling. Even if you have a few friends in the same college they may be in other classes and will experience the same felling of change.
Everyone is excited- Excitement bundled with curiosity and determination is a communal feeling, and a connection you share with everyone. So you won’t have to try to hard to speak to people. Remember, conversations are the start of friendships, and conversations happen only if you talk even though you are meeting a whole new set of people. So speak up, be heard.
Everyone needs friends- College is something that takes a few years, a place where you will spend half your time, so everyone is looking for friends. See where the conversations go, you can have various sets of friends. Friends from class, friends you meet at a certain lecture, friends from your activity group.
Go make some friends!
Class – This is the first place you can be sure to find a friend. Turn to the person next to you and introduce yourself and don’t be shy to answer others questions. After a while in class you will find where you feel comfortable sitting (or whom you sit next to). Time will take its own course and you will interact with many others in class.
Groups- Find your clique. Enroll yourself in various groups of your interest. If its music you like, join the music group, if sports is your forte, join that group. Play for your team or cheer it, either way you will be with friends. Here you will not only find friends of the same age, but also find seniors who once underwent the same feelings. You can always find a friend in a likeminded senior.
Festivals- College festivals help you connect with the spirit of the college and ride the same vibe as everyone else. With high involvement meetings and fun activities you will soon forget that anyone was new. College festivals serve as cement mixers which help you build firm relationships in college. Take part, help organize, join the security, do something hold a flag and shout out your college motto, whatever, by the end of the festival, you will mostly be to busy to even think of more friends.
Common rooms- There’s nothing more common than the common room. From homework, to resting, chatting or simply reading this room is a melting pot of college life. Your best friend might turn out to be the first person you helped in project.
Canteen capers- The best place to hang out with friends in college. Period. Smiling faces and full stomachs make good for making friends. So if you still don’t know anyone, take a walk with some classmates grab a bite and let the conversations flow.
Official matters- Strangely, lines are places you tend to make a few friends at. College lines are another place to break the ice. Simple questions help. If you have queries, you can talk to your peers.
Travel buddies- College apart, you will notice certain people who appear at the same time, use the same routes as you, eventually you may travel together. This is a great way to have company while you travel and make a good friend. It is also greater security to travel with a some friends.
The fun side of college- Besides what the college offers, you will go to movies, coffee shops, picnics and yeah the college parties. Although this may not happen in college, or not necessarily in college hours it will decide and change a few friendships.
Remember to always be yourself; do not do anything because you feel it will make someone be friends. The cool quotient comes from being cool about friendship, not acting or overtly trying to be loud about it. Loud is not necessarily cool.
College is the beginning and ending of many-a-thing. But as most remember it is just another turning point in life. Choose friends wisely as it is always better to spend time with peers who wish to achieve something. Also steer clear of domineering, demanding and overly rebellious peers. Maintain your individuality and college life will ensure develop and hone your individual qualities.
Remember that any friends who pressure you are no friends at all. Freedom comes with responsibility defining college, the change in life and the novel friendships that will develop over time. True friends know how to take ‘no’ for an answer. Besides, now that you are more grown up, the decisions will weigh heavier. College is a fun place. Actually the most fun part of education! And every year you will make newer friends, and look back on the first years and know exactly what they are feeling and like your seniors, you will help them out.
