This is a short summary of how to make homemade jugline for catfishing. I also include legal requirements for use in Texas

This article will describe what I think is the best way to make both free floating and weighted jug lines for use in Texas.  I say Texas because I will describe the laws and regulations for there in Texas.

Materials needed:
1 jug
white paint(spray paint)
sharpie
nylon trotline string
5 hooks
5 swivels
brick

The jug can be any floating container that is sturdy.  I recommend either a 2 liter cola bottle or a Tree Top Apple juice bottle with a handle.  You need to spray paint this white.  By law in Texas your jug lines must be white for non commercial fishing.  Once dry you need to include your name and address on the bottle.  Use the sharpie or other permanent marker to write the information on the bottle.  Cut approximately 30 feet of the nylon string.  Also cut 5 pieces approximately 18 inches long.   On the 30 foot piece of mylon string, slide 5 swivels on it. By law you may not have more than 5 hooks on a jug line.  Tie 1 swivel approximately 2 foot from the end of the string.  Now move 5 feet down and tie another, and so on until all 5 swivels are used.  You should have approximately 2-3 feet of left over line on each end.  Tie 1 end to your jug.  If you are using a cola bottle I recommend using a slip knot so that it will hold tight around the lip of the bottle.  If you are using a jug with a handle you can use any knot that will hold tight around the handle.  On the other end you need to attach a brick or something with a similar amount of weight.  Now attach the 5 pieces of nylon that you cut earlier to each of the 5 swivels.  Attach your hook to the end of each line that you just attached.

You should now have a white jug with your address and name on it.  A 30 foot piece of nylon with 5 swivels, 5 lines, and 5 hooks attached, and a brick at the bottom.  When you go to the lake to deploy your jug lines you need to bring a maker and write the date you put it in the water.  By law in Texas you must have the date you put the jug out written on the jug, and the jug must be picked up within 30 days of being put out.

I recommend using live perch if you want to catch Yellow catfish(Flatheads) or Shad for Blue catfish.
