Having your home burglarized can be a very traumatic experience. Here are some ways you can protect your home.

The most foolproof method of protecting your home is also the most expensive. Equip your home with an alarm system. There are many varying prices for packages and you may find one that fits within your budget.

If you can't afford an alarm system, there are other alternatives that will help. Like window stickers that warn of an alarm system or a dog. These can act as a deterrent. There are do-it-yourself alarm kits that you can also purchase. Home Depot or Lowes sells security cameras and other theft deterrents for the do-it-yourselfer.

Install a steel jam for your sliding glass doors or sliding windows. Your local home improvement store also sells complete kits. The jam prevents the sliders from moving at all. You can also use wooden dowels at least 1" thick.

Install security door bars that go right under the door knob all the way to the floor (this can only be done while you're inside). You can buy one for under $20 at a home improvement store.

Change your routine! Coming and going the same time everyday, leaving in the same car? Try to mix it up a bit. Carpool every now and then. Leaving a car in the driveway can help deter potential burglars by thinking that someone is home.

Away on vacation? Install timers on your lights so that it looks like someone is home. Install motion sensors on outdoor lights. Get friendly with neighbors and offer to keep and eye out for them if they'll do the same.
